What a complete and utter load of tosh! You should really give up this forum lark altogether.

I think they enjoy posting utter nonsense to see the reaction?

Nobody can really be that daft.

now their T and C's wont say you have to provide a license but will state that you are requested to provide any information ragarding your identity if requested to do so and any failure will be deemed as a breach of terms and cons and policy maybe cancelled.
    [/QUOTE]

That's good, because that is exactly what I have done. I have offered all the information they require - and if your wording is correct, it would not specify that the information has to be in the form of photocopies - that is not information - it is forged documents. Information is detail.

The point that you miss, is that it is important to know when you are legally obliged to do something and when you are doing it as a favour. Perhaps you are happy either way. You seem not to be really bothered .......yet! :)

You realise that your new Insurer will almost certainly insist on seeing a photocopy of your licence before processing a theft or fire claim and depending which Insurer might possibly for an accident.

Considering it is standard practice when applying for CRB checks and the like to provide a copy of your driving license I doubt it's illlegal.

Just send a photocopy with a watermark through it so it cannot be reproduced again.

Thanks yes, but let's look at what you have said:

"insist on seeing a photocopy of your licence"

    They can do just that.

    They can see
    a) a photocopy of the licence - no problen
    b) the licence

My dispute is with the insurer wanting to store an actual copy of the licence.

However, if my new insurer tries the same trick and asks for a copy without it being in the t&cs, then they will get a copy (for an easy life) - but a pretty poor copy that I regard as safe and unlikely to be used in crime. I shall also print all over it - THIS IS NOT A VALID LICENCE or similar words,

Thanks. In fact I work with a CRB checking 'company', and as someone who carries out checks myself, we have been told to STOP making photocopies of official documents; this on police advice. We just have to sign to say that , we, individually, have checked that the document we checked was in order.

Perhaps one of the Traffic Officers we have on MSE could explain how the code works.

Not a traffic officer but here goes:

    5 letters, 5 numbers, 5 further letters / numbers.

First 5 letters are the start of your surname (if your surname is fewer than 5 letters then the remaining ones are filled with a '9').

Middle 5 numbers relate to your date of birth: 1st & 6th are the year of your birth; 4th & 5th are the date in the month of your birthday; 2nd and 3rd are the month of your birthday - with '5' added on to the 2nd number if you're female.

    23/11/68 would be 661238 if you're female, 611238 if you're male.

Final 5 digits are more random. Starts with the initials of your forenames (up to max 3, I think - if fewer than 3 then the spare gaps are '9'), and the final 2 digits are random letters.

They will insist on keeping it for audit purposes eg if someone else checks the claim file at a later date to ensure it was processed correctly.

Your policy normally includes a requirement for you to provide all required documents for a claim or words to that effect.

They will have no problem with you writing this is not a valid licence providing it does not obscure the parts of the licence they want to check
