  • Mr RPC pinged me on Skype just after I wrote that to see if I could do any more for him last night, so I stayed up until around 10 typing for him. He's been in meetings all day, so no work, but the agency sent through five files to be proofread this afternoon, which kept me occupied.

One of my regulars has spent £215 on the website - I shall put a note in with her order saying thank you for all her custom and giving her details of the supplier so she can buy direct from now on. I also finally started stock counting the charms and putting them on eBay at clearance prices. All the abalone ones are done, I'll hopefully get to start on the enamelled ones tomorrow.

    I HAVE TO POST!!!!!I
I have been reading your blog the last while. i keep forgetting my log and passwords so takes a while to write in..

Would you not hold onto that customer until you have got rid of the stock that is not shifting and keep updating what they normally buy until you finally close the shop. It is guaranteed income afterall. She LIKES your service and at is why she comes back to you. I know you have to close the shop but maybe think about the method you are following.
    Just my tuppence worth.

Dont forget you have other customers that buy off you as well.

    Doing briliantly by the way.:T:T

I have been typing all day copying notes and I really dont know how you do it. I have started out good and by lunch time I am typing the wrong letters or in the wrong order..

Hello and thanks for your thoughts :) She only orders from me about once a quarter and I hope I'll be closed by the time she's ready to order again. Copy-typing is tiring - one tip which might help is to prop the notes up next to the monitor (you can rig up something with a clipboard or a folder - there are specific plastic note-holder thingies available if it's something you do often), so you only have to move your eyes rather than moving your head to look between the notes and the screen (or the keyboard, if you don't touch-type).

Today has been quiet and not quiet at the same time. Quiet work-wise - one file to proofread, nothing from Mr RPC - not quiet because I had quite an exciting trip to the post office. I was coming down Strathy brae, fairly cautiously because it's a very steep hill and I was approaching the bend, and suddenly found myself on the wrong side of the road, facing the opposite direction to the one I'd been heading and moving backwards :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: I can take absolutely no credit for a) not hitting anything and b) not ending up in the ditch other than remembering the advice I'd once heard to get the wheels pointing in the direction the car was travelling - the ABS and traction control started beeping madly, but managed to get a grip and the dog and I came gently to rest against the verge with no damage to anyone or anything.

Very, very lucky and totally justified two caramel doughnuts to get over the shock ;)

In other car-related news, Mr Minx may have saved himself a small fortune. If you remember the sad saga of the knackered diff - well, it finally gave up the ghost completely a couple of weeks ago and the truck can now only be driven in 2WD, which isn't great in snow and ice, so Mr Minx girded his loins and set about finding out how much it was going to cost to replace.

Now, the local garage we use, as I've mentioned, is excellent and very fair with its pricing, so he phoned them and asked their advice. They said they could do the job and they could get a Nissan diff, but if he wanted to have the full Nissan warranty on it, it would have to be changed out by the Nissan dealership in Inverness. One phone call to Nissan later and a white-faced husband came through to tell me that it would be £2,600+VAT for parts and then labour on top of that  Back on the phone to the friendly local garage, who called Nissan themselves to check the price, then called us back and advised trying a few breakers yards. Hit gold on the second one, ordered Monday, delivered today - £179.90 with a six month warranty :D The truck is booked in on Saturday for it to be fitted next week.
  • Oh, meant to say, today is my 9th anniversary of joining MSE!

£90 less than December :( This is not going to get me debt-free by my birthday on 22nd August. Time to kick my backside up a gear!

  • Goodness what a week! Glad you came away unscathed. You are heading in the right direction - peaks and troughs. You will get there xx

    Loan 2 £1683
    Total £8601 Was £39302
  • Ran 9 miles this afternoon with the wind gusting to 45mph straight at me as I ran up the hill. Didn't get me any further out of debt, but I don't half feel better for doing it :)
  • It is obviously not our week for car-related things. We were on our way into town in convoy this morning, because we were leaving the truck at the garage to have the new diff fitted next week. As we came into the village I had my spin in, it started to hail, so we both slowed down and as I went round the bend at the bottom of the brae and started back up the opposite side, I went round the corner and nearly drove straight into the truck, which was rolled on its side half way across the road :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Miraculously, Mr Minx was unharmed. Neither of us had our phones, but three guys in a Transit pulled up, held the passenger door open and pulled Mr Minx out and then lent us a phone to call the police (we did think that all we needed was the AA, as the only non-truck damage was a couple of bent fenceposts it bounced off, but as soon as they heard that something had been hit, they said we had to call the police).

It took about 40 minutes for the police to get to us, so we filled in the time directing traffic past the cars and explaining to everyone that we were okay (every single car stopped to see if we needed help, people are amazing up here). The police got some warning signs up, interviewed us and then said that since the truck was in the road, they'd arrange the recovery free of charge and since they'd have to stay with it until the recovery vehicle turned up anyway, if we wanted to get on with our day, that was no problem.

Did the usual Tesco shop, poured a pint down Mr Minx over lunch (shock was starting to set in), let the garage know they wouldn't be getting the truck in after all (they thought we were pulling their leg to start with!) and then came home, passing a rather sorry-looking truck on its way to the recovery garage on Wick on our way.

Mr Minx has phoned the insurers, who are getting it taken down to Nissan's accident repair garage near Inverness, where they'll assess it to see if it's a write-off or not. Given he was going so slowly that the airbags didn't even deploy, hopefully it'll just be a case of replacing the driver's window, wing mirror and the two side panels. Still a £500 excess to pay, but I am very, very grateful that I don't have a seriously injured or dead husband tonight. Highland Council really needs to re-think their new policy of not pre-treating roads ahead of bad weather :(
