I've had the Nexus7 8gb version since it started shipping.

I've been using it as my main computer (no desktop or laptop) for a while to see if it can keep up with my day to day work.

And for the most part its's been great! It did take a bit of trial and error to get flash to work, and flash is not that great (low res video in general, with voice sync issues on some sites)

But for email, documents and general browsing it's been great! and it's 100% better with a keyboard (like i'm using now) only down side is the N7 does not have a UK layout for a physical keyboard so you're stuck with the US layout. It's a minor quibble but can get annoying at times!

I've not rooted it yet (that's necxt on my list of things to do but once it's rooted i'll be using a 16Gb usb stick as external storage .

Only reason i've not rooted it is that rooting wipes the entire device back to factory settings.

Programs you NEED to get for the Nexus 7 include:
    Flash 11
Firefox beta (easiest to get flash to work in)
MX player with Neon plugin (That will play movies files the onboard player refuses to!).
Any "Office" software you like. makes it easier to edit files and create documents.

And a one to watch out for is:
VLC ( It's still in testing and on the N7 it crashes when it tries to create movie thumbnails so it's basically useless as a player at the moment.)

    iPlayer
(it's not avalible due to missing flash but i've not tried to install it manually to see if it works with the manually installed flash. But BBC are working on a flashless version that will hopefully be out in time for Xmas)

All and all it's the best 159 Quid i've spent on a tablet. ^_^

You could try this, its pretty low res, but handy until the BBC sorts out the proper app.

If you wish to download the IPlayer app, this can be found at BBC iPlayer_1.3.apk but does not support HD video.

BTW anyone found the headphone socket a bit hit or miss, thinking about a bluetooth pair if there are any recommendations.

Just read this tweet from iPlayer:-
BBC iPlayer ‏@BBCiPlayer For those asking about Nexus 7 / Jelly Bean 4.1 - we are testing the app and will be releasing an update soon. Thanks for your patience.

  • It is interesting to start to see the eBook Reader and tablet markets converge, it was only a matter of time really.

I'm sure the back lighting is doing no good for my eyes however! Does anyone know what the settings on the nexus are like for adjusting/controlling the back light?

You can leave it to the automatic adjustments for brightness (dims or brightens as conditions require), or manually adjust the brightness levels yourself quite easily.

It's not quite as good as the Kindle for reading, but I don't think it's too bad. I think if you're mainly going to be using it as an e-reader, then a kindle might be the better option.

    - look in the 'books' section of your N7, there's a more than adequate 'manual' in there called The Nexus 7 Guidebook
    - it will as clangnuts says tell you all you need to know

Has anyone tried the Nexus Media Importer yet?

"Nexus Media Importer allows you to import and stream music, video, photos and documents from a USB flash drive or SD card connected to your Nexus 7, or other Android 3.2+ devices. This is the only non-root solution for devices that do not provide native support for external flash storage. Requires the following hardware:
    1) An Android 3.2+ device. Examples include Google Nexus devices or the Motorola Xoom.
    2) A USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable. Cost approximately $1 USD on Amazon, see screenshots for examples.
    3) A USB Flash Drive or USB SD Card Reader and SD Card, see screenshots for examples."

I've ordered a USB OTG cable but it hasn't arrived yet.

My USB OTG cable arrived this morning and I plugged it into the Nexus 7, inserted my USB drive and it worked fine with the Nexus Media Importer! :j

I was able to watch a film that was on the drive and it's even possible to save files onto the Nexus 7 but I have't done this yet.

Great stuff - well worth £1.27!

You can try the free Photo Viewer first to check it works.
