Is SP1 and 2 really needed. All the laptop will be used for is the kids to play some games and get onto CBBC style websites.

Yes, each Service Pack contains a lot of patches and security fixes in one go. You may find it better to upgrade the RAM first then carry on with the Service Pack updates.

Ahhh ok. Should be able to order the RAM on Friday (payday woohoo) so will try again then.

Just checked to see if it stated anymore updates and its found another 2, funnily one of those is SP1 lol, will try just once more

all the others came via Windows Update. Service Pack 1 / 2 would be offered through WU eventually, and would be smaller downloads when you got to them as they would be customised to your needs. By downloading the SPs manually you're jumping ahead and getting updates in one go that would otherwise be drip-fed through Windows Update.

Well it seems to be installing so fingers crossed. Never realised I could learn so much from a web forum. Hopefully one day I wont be a PICNIC.

Well let the saga of this laptop continue ......

Windows update says SP1 is ready to update. So I press install. After a few minutes another window appears asking to install SP1, have to agree to licence, told the update could take an hour and laptop will restart several times. Yep no probs I think so I click install and within seconds it say the SP1 has been installed. Hmmmm that was quick I think and when I check ....... nope its not been installed. Have tried several times now and the same things keeps happening. :mad::mad:
