That's fairly normal though. I've my policy with my ncd, my wife has hers. We're both insured for each others car, if we ever get down to just one car, we'll swop insurance over each year to keep the ncd alive.

Something smells. I've gone through an online quote. ncd help, cut and pasted from the RAC site. - " Every year you hold a policy in your own name without making a claim, you earn a no claims discount, which may reduce your premium. " Now, that's with me as policyholder, registered keeper and owner, my wife as main driver. ncd quite clearly from the policyholder, not from the main driver.

Do you have a screen shot?

I cant get a new quote with my name as I'm already a policy holder.

Ok, tried a new online quote. At the bottom of first section called About You it says in small print.....Information that you provide us with will be used in accordance with our terms and conditions. Click here for details.

On clicking the 3rd paragraph read....

Proof of No Claims Discount (NCD) may be required if you take out a policy to which a NCD has been applied. This proof should be a renewal notice, policy schedule or letter from your previous Insurance Company, which shows the main driver as the policyholder and the NCD earned. N.B. This NCD can only be used on one policy at any one time, and must have been used on a policy within the last 24 months.

So perhaps this was where it was hidden last year. Very explicit!

All I can learn is now to read the small print again and again, as it seems they can change from one provider to another.

My quote came from the info by the ncd box, after I set the main driver to be different from the policyholder. That's when it asked for proof from the policyholder, and no mention of the main driver not being the policy holder. It wouldn't hold scrutiny by the FOS, as it's different to other insurers, and it's unclear enough to be classed as not treating the customer fairly, and well hidden.

Looked at RAC quote again and went further, regarding specifying main driver. Had to click i next no claims box and then FAQ to find this...

Who earns the no claims discount entitlement on a policy?
The regular driver earns the no claims discount entitlement on the motor insurance policy.

Am I being completely ignorant or does this seem unfair? I would really like to know which other insurance companies are using these tactics. To date only the RAC do.

Anyone got any tips on complaining?

You will find their complaints procedure set out in the policy document.

But they have pursued this course for a number of years:

Your policy docs should show your wife as the main driver (and her NCD they have allowed), and the certificate should say which of you has the DOC cover, which should be the main driver. Is this the case?

Yes policy docs are as you say, never checked until renewal as never knew of their strange terms. I dont know what DOC cover means?

It just seems a little 'hidden' in their terms to a layperson, who naively followed from past experience.

    You never stop learning.

Do the policy docs (wrongly) show your wife as holding NCD? If so there is the problem you have to consider as mentioned earlier post #25.

DOC = driving other cars (whereby you can drive someone else's car under your policy - third party only)

If your policy allows this they say so on the certificate, and name the driver - normally it's the policy holder, but RAC grant this to the main driver (irrespective of who is the policyholder)
