Can a supermarket confiscate girlfriends debit card?

I went into the 'yellow' supermarket to buy some stuff and paid for it at the self service checkout. Then I went to the kiosk and tried to buy a copy of the Beano and some Moshi Monster stickers for my boys. The attendant took the card because the card machine wasn't working properly so it would have to be swiped. On seeing that it was my girlfriends card i.e. Miss not Mr she proclaimed that she was not able to give me the card back and my partner would have to collect it.

Are they allowed to do this As I has the card it makes sense that I have permission to use it? And also under what authority do they have to keep hold of it?

How do they know you are the cardholders boyfriend ? You could have just stolen the card. Well spotted by the cashier i say !

Tell your girlfriend to be careful what she says to her bank if they become involved, she has broken the terms or her account by allowing you to use it.

Yes, they are allowed to do this.

I would think they're within their rights. Rather than take the view that since you have someone else's card you must have permission, I would imagine the more common explanation is that since you have someone else's card you shouldn't be using it.

Check with the bank for their view.

Well TBH I don't know many fraudsters who's first port of call is the beano, it's probably a jobsworth cashier trying to earn brownie points.

Hats off to the Big Yellow Supermarket for preventing fraud.
The card is the property of the bank, The supermarket is a merchant, you are very lucky they will let her collect it.

And it could have easily been a fraudster trying a verification on some low priced goods first.

It all starts with the Beano, the money laundering comes after. :D

Cashiers who retain stolen cards get a £50 reward, so not just brownie points ! If the supermarket contact the bank, the card will be stopped anyway so the girlfriend might not be able to collect it.

I work in the service industry and see people using other peoples card all the time. I would soon lose trade if I embarrassed my customers by confiscating bank cards every time. It seems totally over the top on the part of the 'yellow' supermarket! Strange how I was allowed to keep the items I'd purchased to the self service checkout though.

Evidently, card thieves usually make a small purchase first, to check that the card is still valid.

I usually get a call on my mobile from my CC provider's fraud prevention people, when I use it buy stuff on eBay for just pennies. It's nice to know that they're on guard.
