The mortgage calculator on here is very good to give you a rough idea, and it was what spurred me on to not have a mortgage at all, as when i put the total of a house we didn't even really want that much, it would acually have to pay back nearly double i figured i'd rather save for a few years instead.

Well done on starting your op, now the fun starts :)

well off "on holiday " from the other job - for the next week - so at job number two today, and booking down for lots of OT. Impressed myself - did the shopping on line and cant belive how little it came to - obviously i just impulse buy - ok the dates are abit rubbish but the main of teh stuff freezes.
Got a guest all week so budgeting the meals , and going to the supermarket after picked him up so he can get any bits he wants rather than me subbing him.
got hooked to deal monster to - but that can only be a good thing - saving money on stuff we would normally get.
secretly enjoying this trip so far...... and delighted that got our CT bill and it wasnt as big as expected - so saving that money automatically now as an over payment!!! yay!! xx:T

well.... d\y to sort stuff out - put direct debit on the new house for the council tax, and paid off all i owe. ime to start on the house repayments. going to set up £50 off a month on DD on morgage, then any extras are a bonus. please excuse my rambling smy oh and i are very finacially seperate so this house would appear to be my responsibility ...... we share the bills but teh other house was in his name and he is renting it out as the pension pot.
was weak yesterday and treated myself to a jacket £22 i have not felt so guilty for...... clearing out my stuff from the rents today ( yes i have stuff everywhere), and setting dd up for my depleated isa's as my emergency fund.
This money saving seems to be increadibly hard out in the real world!!! damn you shops!! xx

Don't feel bad about treating yourself occassionally - its a long journey and you will need stuff. To cut out all treats makes it really depressing!

Hi money curious I'm just starting thinking about op our mortgage we got married last year and spent this year paying any debt off and saving an emergency saving pot now that's done is mortgage time! We also have a balance of £138 k and I'm planning on trying to op £3k next year. We have made a start by adding the mortgage as a payee on my online account so I can overpay from £10 a time. When I was clearing my credit card I would round my account balance down to £10s so if I had £189 in my account i'd transfer the £9 straight onto my card I never noticed the money really but it soon adds up!
Interested to see how you get on x
  • thats a really good idea - i already do that with my saving card at a well known supermarket - so by the time i get to xmas - we will have "free" shopping!!
Love that idea though - trouble is Natwest have said i need to open a current account up so that i can watch my mortage online. To be honest we have been doing the house, getting married etc , and just about getting straight again if that makes sense. i thought about doing regular over payments - buth then something comes up so would rather squirrell away and then knock lumps off when i can .
How are you going about it?
The thing thats getting to me is i feel like i am a one man band as it were! xx

My dh is the same switches off whenever I talk money :-) we got married last year and updated our kitchen and bathroom this year so we've not had much spare cash in January our sons tarts pre school do out child care will be £300 less a month so a part of that will go to mortgage op.
Dh puts £200 away each month to cover yearly bills and we make this account up to £4k anything else willgo to mortgage. The spare income has come from increases in my pay which we have just saved and reduction in costs of living by being more frugal I can't believe how much money we used to waste! We also have used cash back sites and eBay which bumps things up slowly but surely!
Could you look at any other outgoings that you could reduce? For example our contents ins was so high and it didn't even cover my engagement ring we renewed this year with someone new and it was half price to our previous one also gas and electricity is 30% cheaper now we have done a comparison and monitored our usage! This year we have also for the first time in our lives paid our insurance in full in cash which was a nice feeling it just about being super organised with money and being prepared! With that said we have had treats we both work 40+ hours a week over 4 days so we both have a day at home with our son and on those days we like to have fun but everything is budgeted for including a date night a week could be meal put (rarely) more likely to be a done in for £10 from m and s or a film and popcorn!
Anyway I've rambled enough and probably not making much sense But congrats on massive overpayment this month I hope next year I'll be able to join you with some larger ops
  • well had abit of a glitch - feeling abit down atm. Got a ball coming up - so bought a dress off flebay , and its perfect £20 including postage - made up. on the odwn side - needed a new pair pf boots so £65 ( but my bday coming up so will swap the moneys for that!). bit stressed with OH , he is so blazay with the whole thing. been looking into swapping electric supplier , and moving my house insurance ..... cant fathom out if i can swap insurance yet though as it will be annual... but not missing any deals!!on plus side £15 tax back - straight into OP.n wfh atm so cuts cost of petrol etc.anopther load of "rubbish" on ebay to so all helps......... at rents house for tea , so no need to cook or put heating on ..... i feel like scrooge!!! it'll be worth it eventually! xx

  • oh dear what a week...... had bank account hacked..... so in process of re setting everything up..... not good - wouldnt wish on any one!!! on a positive applied for 4 jobs. and eating up out of the freezer .... already done one week so going to bottom it and then start a fresh hopefully it will last till start of november. just buying fresh stuff ie milk, yoghurts and fruit . made the £30 in my purse ( the only cash i have!) last and got £20 left. OH thankfully filled the car up so that was lucky!!
off out tomorrow night for a treat , using vouchers that we had lurking in the draw from xmas i think(?!). started a book club at work so working way through that - seeing as we cant spend any "real" money.
hows everyone else getting on - any tips would be greatfully recieved....
OP this month looks +ve better than others - mainly as the devil card is none existant!!!....... oh how the frugal life is so rewarding!
