If you are put out by it, then do something about it? What university do you attend?

I have put it in a letter to the big boss in these matters and I am still waiting an answer.

  • Have you tried

    1) contacting your head of dept
    2) personal tutor (if you have one)
    3) Students union
    4) the applicable charity
    5) NUS
    6) complaints dept

I have written to the Head of Disability support about all my concerns and surprise surprise I never got any answer.

But I am not a moaner as the disability support fails to do basic things like reply to lecturers on how to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people to take a certain module.

    Constructive - fantastic.

I assume you still have a copy of this letter, and have given a reasonable time for a response? If so, follow it up with a phone call or email.

If you still get no joy, then your university will have a Grievance/ Complaints Procedure.

Just by taking small, structured steps, you will get somewhere.

If, when following the procedure, you are still getting nowhere, then you need to involve your MP.

When you have specific concerns, then people will be willing to help.

When you are just moaning (and you do moan Phil, we all do (some more than most?)!), people will just switch off.

    Constructive Phil!

If a student has a learning difficulty of any sort they should be given the appropriate support during the exam on application prior to sitting it (extra time, laptop, scribe, coloured paper, light filters, seperate room, rest breaks etc depending on what is appropriate)

Papers then tend to be marked all together to one standard and quite often you will not know what help has been given unless it is necessary for you to know, for example a student who has had an amanuensis may have a note attached to say that any diagrams were drawn by the student or that they were drawn under instruction. This is in order to give an unbiased view of content of the paper.

Individual cases are then discussed afterwards in the examiners meetings. This also helps if a student has been ill in the exam time or has difficult personal circumstances (things like coping with berevement, divorce etc) - where they wouldn't have had any extra help in the exam, but are not fulfilling their full potential because they are under starin some other way. Marks can then be increased to take such factors into account.

I was given special exam conditions when I was a student and am very grateful for the way my university supported me during exam times. I don't believe I was ever punished for needing a bit of help in exams at uni and certainly haven't been in my "real world" jobs or post-grad courses.

EDIT - I took me ages to type that response - and there was only a few answers on the thread when I started, so sorry if it looked like I haven't read the rest of it!

Phil, I'm really sorry that you feel so unhappy at university and I hope things get better for you. I'm not sure what I can say to help that hasn't already been said in some of the posts above. I used to advise my students to try and express exactly why they felt unhappy to see if it helped them put things in perspective. It seems like a silly thing to do but thinking - I am unhappy about X because it means I can't do Y and this makes me feel Z - often helps to break the problems down into small parts and helps you to deal with them bit by bit rather than making you feel overwhelmed by it all. It also helps you when you ask for advice as people can respond to a specific queries much more easily than trying to understand all your frustrations and anger. You have to try and seperate out what you want them to do from how you feel about the situation as it is (hope that makes sense). I wish you all the best of luck in sorting things out.

Because I am allowed privacy here like everyone else.
Plus, what if someone from the uni read it then I might get into trouble.

No Phil, you are not wrong. But you need to take responsibility for your own life. You still want to blame everybody else for your misfortune.
