It make me mad but I do have to control myself as things like disabled access and disabled lifts are left locked or broken and some disabled people have had serious falls as a result and yet the university as always has a get out blaming it on students.

You can just expect really a university can get away with failing to support disabled people and then will do nothing on the marks front.

Do they even know about the disability!?!?!?!?

Unis aint mind readers Phil. Not only that but if your disability is your legs then i'm sorry.....legs don't affect your brain and wouldn't blame the uni for not giving you compensation for that!

Its weird how this thread has gone from 10% for spelling to a problem with his legs to a 'disability'
  • Well if you feel so strongly about it, try spending less time on here postwhoring ;) and more time involved in your student union/NUS campaigning.

So to make HE real world we should not offer any support.

phil - if you are missing the point this badly about what people are writing, then i'm not surprised that you struggle in your degree.

last summer we told you to go to speak to people to get help - to go to your student rep, to speak to a tutor, to put things in writing and send emails and speak to the students union - all these paths were open and available. universities simply cannot afford to ignore people who need extra help - however students need to tell them they need it. i just can't believe that your university would be able to get away with the standard of support that you claim that they have given you. and if they had, you SHOULD have spoken to one of a hundred people about it before now.

interestingly (assuming i have the right faculty at the right uni) - i found this document sugggesting that they do, in fact, take disability seriously:
    http://www.staffs.ac.uk/uniservices/ess/Disability_Advisory_Service/dyslexia_support.php

it sounds like someone in a panic trying to find yet more excuses as to why it's not their fault that they won't do very well. if you put even half the effort you do into whinging on this site into your work you would be doing so much better.

They know every student is disabled or not if they declared it on UCAS, so I would say they do know most people exist and they choose to not be forthcoming with help.

  • The help is there if you look/ask for it!

We all keep telling you the same thing - you need to ASK for help if you require it!

Phil i am an Assistant Warden in Uni Accomadation. The data we get about someones disability is 'problem with vision' or 'problem with hearing'. How many problems could fall into those categories?

In fact upon liaising with the students it ranges from being deaf or blind to extremely poor eyesight or hard of hearing in one ear. The uni only gets the 'general' label that the student has an issue from UCAS and uni admittance forms. If you want to blame someone for this you blame the law for the privacy laws we have in the country.

It is therefore up to the student to ask us for things they need like special signs, alarms or personal evacuation plans. As soon as a student asks we bend over backwards to sort it.

Stop moaning, get a life and go speak to your uni

I have never been to staffs ever as far as I know.

I have spoken to my lecturers many times and they send me to Student support people who then send me back to Lecturers. So in my personal experience disability support is nothing more than buck passing.
