Is it fair to put someone in an exam with as much as 10 % off before they start?

Exam adjustments cannot cover every situation.

For instance, conditions that affect a candidates ability to retain information. These candidates will gain no benefit by having extra time, and their coursework tends to be a much better indicator of their actual ability.

We appear to have moved from the perceived automatic deduction of 10% for dyslexics to the ins and outs of marking. Prehaps you have never known it happen as you are not dyslexic nor have investigated the support available properly. In addition it is unlikely as a student that you will know exactly how the marks in an exam are made up whether by marking up during moderation processes/special circumstances or deemed to be "as marked" due to arrangements made in the exam.

I could hardly walk at one set of exams for one reason or another and I know I did not get my marks adjusted up so I know from my experience that they do not adjust marks hardly at all unless you are nearly dying.

I never said automatic deduction of 10% but it was more like a 10 % handicap.

With respect Phil, how do your legs affect you writing in an exam?

The Special Circumstances Panel are quite fair, but they will look at how your condition directly affects your performance in the exam, not how it affects your life in general.

I have never been near death when my circumstances have been accepted (thankfully I never needed my marks changing!).

They were rather painful because of an inquiry. And the exam stress made that worse, so it was rather off putting when I was doing the test.

sounds like studentphil goes to a crap university!

At my uni there are procedures in place to take things into account. The university was going to discount my 3rd year mark and just use years 1,2 and 4 to give me a degree. So for you to moan about 10% for spelling is pretty lame.

Or maybe the only lame thing is the fact you haven't researched procedures and/or things your uni has in place for these things....or as i already said maybe its just your uni that is lame.

Only thing i have to say is please don't come here saying its HE institutions as a whole.

    Phil,

That is not a reason for Special Circumstances.

The Panel give dispensation for those with long term conditions, where they have been provided with medical evidence of how this directly affects the performance of the candidate. The Panel also considers whether the candidate has mitigated their own circumstances, for instance, are they taking medication to minimise the effects of their condition.

  • How do you know you didn't get marked up?

Did they reject your extenuating circumstances?

I know my university has problems in dealing with disabled people as they are fairly for happy for things like people with poor vision to go down uneven paths with poor lighting and they don't see it as an issue even though it is highly dangerous.
