  • Tesco's own Oat Cereal as it keeps me going to lunchtime and has no wheat flakes in. I should make my own museli but never get round to it.

If I'm on holiday, though, and someone else is cooking, then smoked haddock with a poached egg and gluten free toast with butter. If I can have some fruit with a yoghurt on top too, then I will. And coffee.

Porridge made with water (done in the microwave) and a tsp of demerera sugar added, toast with marmalade and 2 cups of coffee for me - THEN I can face the day. Keeps me going till past lunchtime as I often don't get time for a break.

I'll normally have bran flakes but if gyming that morning I like to have grilled bacon and sausage (the high meat content ones) and scrambled egg. Pukka. :)

What I wanted to ask is whether not eating breakfast is bad because when you get hungry you might just grab crisps, chocolate or whatever's easiest or is it to do with metabolism or something? Anyone know?

Eating first thing in the morning helps to stabilise blood sugar levels, which control appetite and energy.

Skipping breakfast can lead to tiredness, lack of concentration and poor performance of whatever you’re doing during the day. It also means that you are more likely to snack on unhealthy foods before lunch as you have pointed out.

Breakfast gives your metabolism a kick start. Not eating breakfast will cause your metabolism to be sluggish and therefore you will store more fat.

Eating breakfast also has long term health benefits too. It can reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

If you don’t have much time first thing in the morning try doing what greenbee does and prepare breakfast the evening before. Alternatively eat something on the way to work, the more nutritional the better.

Any breakfasts is better than no breakfast, though try not to have things like doughnuts or pastries all the time as they're high in calories, sugar, and fat. Also, they don't contain the nutrients you really need.

I noticed porridge is quite popular here which is good.

When we were children my parents use to prepare a load of porridge in the evening and then to help it stay warm they would leave it in the pot in a box wrapped with lots of news paper. It really did keep it warm too and was great first thing in the morning as you didn't have to reheat it.

I stopped eating breakfast quite a while back as I found my appetite wasn’t very good first thing, now I eat breakfast all the time. If you get back into the habit of eating breakfast you’ll find your appetite returning sooner than you’ll think.

The old phrase breakfast is the most important meal of the day actually has some truth in it as you can see.

I also make sure I drink a glass of fruit juice and some water before I leave the house, and have a banana with me either to eat in the car on the way to work, or as soon as I finish my workout if I'm going to the gym before work. That way, if I get up a 6am and don't get to work (and my breakfast) before 10am, I've still had something to help kick-start my metabolism.

Apparently hot water and lemon is good first thing too, if you have time for it...

My dh makes a big tub of hm muesli and soaks it the night before but that is too calorific for me so I have mini shredded wheats or porridge with a few added dried blueberries. He has oranje juice and I don`t, again because of the high sugar. The difference being that he is a lycra cyclist and I tend to put weight on too easily

I used to make hm granola and it was lovely also as a topping for yoghurt etc as a desert. Again too calorific and I don`t go for heated oils and overbaked cereals and nuts ec

Hot water and lemon is an ideal morning drink, as it aids the digestive system and makes the process of eliminating the waste products from the body easier.

My dad use to drink boiled water first thing in the morning, he told me it was very good for you. I tried it once and thought it was disgusting!

I’ve read last night that breakfast should include starchy food as well as this provides us with energy. Foods such as bread (preferably wholemeal) or wholegrain cereal are a great start to the day as they provide a slow release of energy.

Porridge is ideal as it’s a wholegrain cereal which is also high in fibre.

You could also try toasted teacakes or slices of malt loaf for a tasty and healthy option. Starchy foods like this will fill you up and keep you going until lunch.

I sometimes like soda bread or barmbrack for breakfast if I’m feeling flash.

Also, try a mixture of fruits such as an apple, banana, orange, grapefruit, mango, plum, small portion of grapes and/or a satsuma. Eating fruit for breakfast is very good for you as it helps towards your five portions of fruit and veg a day.

I don't usually eat breakfast, but tend to have something like toast or a sandwich late morning instead. The occasional times that I do eat breakfast, I'll have either porridge or toast.

I've never had to watch my weight and haven't found that not eating breakfast makes me want to eat rubbish food.

Hubby on the other hand, tended to snack mid-morning despite having toast for breakfast, so now I do him a couple of eggs scrambled with his toast and he finds that he doesn't get those cravings anymore.
  • I don't like cereals and toast doesn't fill me up. I have yogurt nearly every morning, but I also like eggs at weekends.

All the traditional breakfast foods seem like junk food to me, all high in sugar and low in protein. You should eat protein at every meal, it's what keeps you full up. As evidenced by Gigervamp's husband.
