Deskfasts :D. That is exactly what I'm after. Some of look like they would make me obese if I had them every day though. But I do like the idea of a savoury breakfast - perhaps alternated with a more simple yoghurt and fruit breakfast.

Breakfasts should be able to keep you going until lunch.
    • Yoghurt and Banana with a small amount of museli added is a good source of slow release energy
    • Or Boiled Egg in a Pitta with some cress and a little mayo
    • A slice of frittata
    • A couple of scotch pancakes spread with jam or marmalade plus a piece of fruit
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I am newly converted to smoothies (Thanks to Wyrdsister). I can't eat first thing so take to work in a waterproof container and a few ice cubes, stays cold for hours! Putting some oats in makes extra filling and slow release energy. I am going to try frozen fruit next as I think it is cheaper.

  • i have been reading 'eat your heart out' by fecility lawrence and found it interesting reading about how we associate breakfast with a box of cereal and how many cereals are highly processed.

she mentions wholemeal toast and butter and porridge oats were commonly eaten before boxes of cereal were marketed to the masses.

so i'm wondering does anybody else not eat cereal and what do you have for breakfast instead? i am trying to move to a much less processed diet..as well as saving money.

I have recently started making my own oaty granola, since I realised how much oatibix I was geting through!!! It is really easy, much cheaper and actually tastier, cos you can adjust it to your own tastes. Also healthier I'm sure. I think the recipe I use is from a site called Mr Breakfast, but if you google homemade granola, or homemade cereal, you should get lots of links. It takes me maybe 10-15 minutes to make, and one batch lasts a couple of weeks-ish, so not very onerous.

I always eat porridge for breakfast with freshly cut fruit (whatever I fancy at the time), or blueberries, with 2 spoonfuls of ground flaxseed on top. Yummy and heart-healthy !

It depends how I feel in the morning but I generally eat porridge for breakfast - porridge is very good for
cholesterol apparently. On a hot summers morning I might have something a lot lighter as porridge tends to rise your body temperature. Wholemeal toast with jam or honey and a mug of strong ground coffee is a winner for me as an alternative to eating porridge followed by a banana.

One of my sisters use to eat leftovers from the night before and that was including curry, noodles or a rice dish of some sort.

I was watching Rick Stine a few days ago who I think was in Thailand were they ate noodles for breakfast. I'm not sure if I could stomach noodles first thing in the morning but if I was in a country like Thailand I'm sure I'd give them a go as long as it was a smallish/light dish.

As an alternative you could try what Spanish people eat for breakfast - pastries, cakes, biscuits, ground coffee.

They don't eat Spanish omelettes for breakfast as Woody Alan's Mrs seems to think, this tends to be too heavy on the stomach eaten first thing in the morning.

I like yoghurt, fruit or a boiled egg! I do like porridge, or bran flakes (with a few sultanas) occasionally too.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

I've never eaten breakfast unless it's a weekend and I have a late breakfast instead of lunch (fried one). I prefer a lie in to getting up and creating a mess in the morning that I'll have to walk back into when I get home from work.

I'm supposed to be 'eating clean' (having varying degrees of success) and for breakfast I have either porridge (with water for calorific purposes, you could have milk which is nicer IMO) or an omelette (1 whole egg + 2 whites).
