What I find strange here, is why was the person recording you? Do you have a habit of telling these jokes, so they were actually ready for your joke session, knowingly that they were going to complain about you. So that means they were recording you secretly? My point is here, if thats the case then you must have a history of this as why would they be randomly recording you.. Something your not telling us here.
On the other side of it, you will be dismissed for gross misconduct. Even if they where a couple of jokes, its to serious for any company to just let go under the carpet these days. If you did not lose your job, All it would take is for the complainee to complain higher about the company not dealing with racism and then it would look bad on your manager.0 -

could you post the jokes on here to cheer everyone up a bit and so we can see what the fuss is all about.0

I think it kinda depends on what was said. The person that recorded the jokes, were they one of the minority groups that you were berating? Have you said these kind of things before? I'm just wondering why they just happened to decide to start recording you, if it was a one off recording you probabally wouldn't have been the first thing on their mind.
The tone of voice is also a factor you can say something genuinely for comic effect or you can say something in a way that is more sinister.
It's just so hard to comment without knowing exactly what was said etc.0 -
Go onto any building site or factory floor in the land and you will hear jokes, general mickey taking and banter, It passes the time of day. There is also a good chance a joke will be mocking something about someone, so it could potentially be offensive to some gentle soul. My advice is that people need to lighten up and learn to laugh at themselves. All the misery in the world and we castigate people for a bit of humour. The worlds gone mad. You will also find some of the 'worst' culprits are those with the most stressful jobs, ie military, nursing, emergency services etc. It helps to take their minds off some of the things they have to see and promotes a common bond. I suggest all these white collar workers who get so easily offended need to grow a pair.0

As a ex union rep I don't think I would stand any chance of winning this one! What I would look at is why is somebody recording you, what have they done with that recording etc etc.The World come on.....0

Your in the education business yet you chose to tell not one but a series of racist jokes which you class as overtones.
You seem annoyed that someone taped and reported you hence you saying they did it malicioulsy why!!! You say you can explain why you told them, but causing offence to others is what you clearly done even when you could tell that you had gone to far.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I am not supporting the telling of racist jokes, but I have to ask, what on earth was this person doing recording you, presumably without your permissions. I am not entirely sure I would want to work in an office where there is someone sitting there recording everything that is going on. Could the person doing the recording not be accused of gross misconduct also?
Sorry, seem to have been beaten to that question! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
As the OP is short on detail, could I suggest that as they are in the education business one or more of the pupils/students/trainees recorded the session as a matter of course? Lots of people do it now as an alternative to taking notes there and then.0
