Dog skin problems - again or ongoing...not sure

Sorry, I don't have any experience of skin/hair problems, & I've probably missed earlier threads of yours about this.
Her lower back hair loss looks very much like what was suffered by the "mouser" cat kept by our local hardware shop, which turned out to be a flea allergy. Since I'm sure you would have noticed any fleas this can't be the answer, although it may be the result of some other allergy.
It could also be due to being kept in a too dry environment from central heating/air conditioning/dehumidifier. Our dog's always happiest after about Easter, which is about the earliest we're prepared to leave the patio door open so he can come & go at will - he just likes being outside rather than inside (until it rains - or it gets dark - or a fierce-looking rabbit approaches him).
Vet is obviously the best hope of getting a realistic answer - hope all goes well for her next week.0 -
Lower bak is not hair loss- she has been shaved as she had hip replacement surgery 4 weeks ao
It is just the wat her fur is growing back with like a bald patch - combination with those weird spots...
Thanks0 -
Sorry, didn't know - as I said, I don't know her history.
Her body is probably just coping with the physical trauma of the op, the same as our hair is in or out of sorts depending on our health. The baldish patch is probably just a personal "Zara anomaly", just as we have crowns of strong hair growth & areas where the hair is less dense.
Hope all goes well with her at the vets.0 -
Gorgeous looking dog:) . They do put us on the rack when they're not well!
I'd also be worried about the little pimples if you're sure they're new, in case its some sort of subcutaneous infection. OTOH you know your dog, is her demeanour saying she's out of sorts? (Other than the op. effects). Dogs have a high pain threshold, but otherwise they aren't secretive with discomfort. I reckon if they eat normally there's nothing seriously wrong. If she's off her food (unless always a picky eater) then I'd worry.
Only your vet can give you a serious answer, & the appointment's booked, so you just have to wait (on your rack) for an answer.0 -
Scraggy has something that looks like that, his are warts.
Poor Scraggy is like the A-Z of everything that could go wrong with a dogHe has always suffered with bad skin. Itchy, scratchy, red raw. You have my absolute sympathies! If Zara is itchy have you tried her on anti-histamines? I just use cheapy ones from the supermarket. They take some of the itchiness away.
I bet they are warts. Poor Scraggster has one growing on the top of his head. He has had them removed before but they just grow back.I have realised I will never play the Dane!
Where are my medals? Everyone else on here has medals!!0 -
Thanks - Zara does not seem to be itchy - never see her scratching at all.
Vet appointment on Thursday at 6:45, "per taxi" booked as can not take her on a bus/long walk due to her being so short post op.
I am getting paid on Thursday and looks like whatever I may thought will be "left over" - is going to stay at the vets (again).
If I see any more ads for pets wanted for free as "ca not afford to pay but offer a good home" - I am gonna screaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam at people0 -
Hopefully you'll get some positive news at the vets. My boy used to have such dreadful flaky skin - I created a snow storm every time I groomed him! He is long coated too, so it stayed in his coat if I didn't keep grooming the dead skin out. His skin is terrific now and he no longer chews or scratches.gettingready wrote: »If I see any more ads for pets wanted for free as "ca not afford to pay but offer a good home" - I am gonna screaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam at people

Thanks..
Zara's fur on top looks almost normal - just a biot dry and stickng out in all directions.
Her undercoat is another matter.... terrible, dull colour with dandruff - and those spots and flakey skin...
NOt long till the vet visit tomorrow.. will update
Thanks a lot everyone0 -
good luck & keep us posted.
If you do choose to use coconut oil on her in the future - use either organic (about £8 a pot, spreads like butter & smells yummy as it's `virgin' stuff) or cooking grade stuff (not the scented tiny tubs sold in Superdrug). The cooking stuff comes in plastic tubs & is about £2.50 for 500ml - I get mine in small asian independent food stores.
Don't bother with the tiny glass bottles some `ordinary' supermarkets sell it in - too expensive/fiddley.0 -
Thanks - can not imagine using oil directly on her fur - isn't she going to be greasy all over and leaving it on walls/furniture etc? Making all slippery (for her)?
OR does it absorb really well?
How can I get it on her skin when she had such a thinck undercoat and is long haired anyway? PUtting flea drops on her skin is very difficult as almopst impossible to park hert fur to get to the skin...hmmmm0
