Dog skin problems - again or ongoing...not sure

Options
OK, despite having been on Salmon Oil for a while now - Zara still has very flaky skin, her undercoat is greyish and full of dandruff despite being brushed qith a rake quite often and now some "lumps" appeared on her skin too.

Will take her to the vets next week but perhaps someone seen those before and have some idea what they are?

Skin around is not red, she is not scratching, they are hard to touch, small and with like a "hole" on top, nothing comes out when pressed, they are dry like and hard but quite small - crap photos but perhaps you can get the idea:

They do not seem to bother her but they bother me of course.

She has several of those in her fur on the skin but none on her bald parts (belly or under "arms" etc)

I was able to take a photo of the ones that are at the back of her shaved leg as the ones on her body wher fur is are impossible to take a photo of.

Any idea what that may be?

The rake I am using ios not sharp at all (like the furminator - that is way too sharp) so those are not scratches or similar.

Also, her fur is growing back with a weird bald patch like on the photo below:

There is no lumps/pumps on that patch. But all over Zara very flaky skin, comes off when scratches in dry dundruff like pieces.

I wonder is those "spots" are connected or a cause of her dry skin/bad coat?

Thanks a lot...

Cant help with the lumps getting, but for the dry flakey skin I would use Coconut oil. Its not harmful if licked and believe me it works like magic.

Poor Zara I hope she improves soon, please give her a wee tummy rub from me xx

  • Aww poor girl :(
What food is she on? My first thought would be that it could be diet related. An allergy/intolerance perhaps?

One of my dogs had dry, itchy skin and fur faking out when I adopted him (although nowhere near as bad as Zara). It cleared up when I switched him to a raw diet without grains or additives.

Tickles for Zara; I hope you get it sorted soon!

    Thanks a lot everyone.

Those spots really bother me - what on earth can this be?

Will be going to the vets Thursday or Friday - need to organise a car as she can do but/30 min walk at the moment, still on very limited exercise post op.

She is on Skinners but those problem started when she was still on Orijen so probably not food. Plus allergy related "spots" look very different....

All those "spots" have like a litle hole on top of them, they are not round on top, nothing to squeeze as they are dry and hard.. hmmm

Will try that coconut ool/goose fat too but those spots bother be and wonder if those are the reason for her dry skin/dull fur :(

I personally would not put anything on her skin untill you know what they are. They could be cysts or bites of some kind. A little flora on her food will help coat cond. This was recommended by one of the top veterinary dermatolagists in this country so should think its safe.
Hope you dont mind me saying but Zara does look a litte too tubby in photos, keeeping her weight down wll help her joints, Im sure vet will advise you.

Thanks - that is what I am thinking, not to put anything on her skin till the vet sees her.

Her weight is fine vet said, she has masses andmasses of fur, her undercoat os out of this world so makes her look much fatter than she is. Also her chest/rib cage is quite wide. She is a mutt really ;)

She was overweight at 40kg at some point but we have dealt with it, she is down to 36 and she is really BIG for a female (long and tall) so her weight is fine...

I know what you mean about the coat, my girls is the same. I would try to keep her on the lean side with her hip probs though but I know its hard when you cant exercise them.
Hope her skin is ok, there are lots of expensive supplements for coat and skin but flora is much cheaper and it works!
