I am in the middle of quite big internal house rennovation. Various things done today. Got hoover out about an hour ago just to get the worst of the debris up. Neighbour has just called to say noise through the day acceptable - heavy banging etc. The sound of my hoover (a slight drone in the background on bare floorboards) whilst hoovering hall and stairs not acceptable.) I am in a mid-terraced house with my hall/stairs abutting her lounge.) !!!!!! it is only just gone 8 pm. I wouldn't normally hoover at this time of night. They are a couple in their 50s, no kids. She must be watching Eastenders!
Maybe I should hoover between 9.30 and 10.30 when she is on a day off and watching Jeremy Kyle.
Sorry, just had to get my emotions out!

I had to suffer 5-6 weeks of the people upstairs doing up their kitchen and I have to say that, although I have a lot of sympathy for you, and I understand that 8pm is not late, when you have had your neighbours doing diy for a while repeatedly and making quite a bit of noise, you do tend to lose you patience and ability to cope with it.
In my case, my neighbour was working away during the week so only worked on his kitchen on a Sunday, sometimes until 8-8.30 pm and eventhough I understood why this was happening, I found it very stressful and found myself unable to relax at times, because of the noise, the banging of hammers, the dropping of tools on the floor, etc.
So please try and put yourself in your neighbours' shoes for a while. They didn't choose for all this work to be done. Them not having kids is irrelevant. And slagging off their life style in your post is not doing you any favours either.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

If there's been banging all day I would be pretty p*ssed off if there was still noise at gone 8pmTry to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
If this is enough to reduce you to tears, then it's time to stop. Really. The hoovering can wait till tomorrow, say about 11am. You're shattered and the neighbours have had enough. It's 8.30 on a Friday night. Get the corkscrew out, sit back and chill. Don't fall out with the neighbours - they'll be there long after the building work's finished, and so will you.Reason for edit? My work only started today and will be finished no later than midweek next week. No work this weekend.
I am sorry, but I don't think I have slagged off their life style. They don't have young children who would be disturbed. I did inform my neighbours that work would be done so they were aware. I understand they haven't chosen for this work to be done. Neither did I choose when they had double glazing and other work done last year when there was some noise and banging about. I wasn't bothered. It was only for a few days.0 -

Yes, I agree it could have waited. However, I thought a quick going round to clear a bit of debris would have been OK>
Yes, I am shattered and yes, the corkscrew should be out. I don't want to fall out with them and perhaps next week when work is done I should ask them through to admire the work and have a glass of wine!0 -

They are both out at work all day and I had already mentioned that work was being done (but not at weekend).
Hoovering I don't think is classed as great noise. And I don't usually hoover in the evening.0 -
I think they're being mean. I wouldn't want to sit down at the end of the day with my house in a mess so they should expect that you might want to do a bit of clearing up. If you're hoovering floor boards why not compromise and get a brush; less noise. Take a nice bottle of wine round for them tomorrow and apologise - they'll probably feel bad for saying something.
Good luck with the renovationsIt's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.:kisses3:0 -

Making a sarky comment about the neighbour watching JK on their day off is slagging off their lifestyle. Otherwise, you wouldn't have made the comment!
It's not only people with children who can be disturbed. I have no small children living with me, but I still get very stressed with noise made by inconsiderate neighbours.
Your neighbours may have been at home all day, being subjected to the noise, and they've now had enough. Or they may have had a long, difficult week that you don't know about and want a bit of peace and quiet on a Friday night. Hell, I've had a really good week at work and I'm still shattered and ready for a quiet night in.
But somehow, I don't think you will understand what I'm saying, since you've decided the neighbours are wrong.
I have a pan and brush and that's what I use when I need to clean up and don't want to disturb anybody.
Bambam, you sound like the ideal neighbour

I think I'd be cranky with my neighbour too if there was continual noise throughout each day and evening.
I understand that you're doing renovation work and there will be noise and I'm sure your neighbour does too, but it wouldn't hurt to pop over with a cake/box of chocs and appologise for the disruption and thank them for their patience. You could ask them if there's is a particular time of the day when they find the noise most difficult and try to respect that as much as is feasible. They would probably also love it if you were able to give them an estimated end-date for the work
Presumably if you're doing a lot of renovation work you intend to stay in the house for a while, so it would be best to keep your neighbours on side.0 -
I think I have just over-reacted due to being overtired. I honestly wouldn't have thought my hoover just before 8.00 pm would have been a problem especially as they knew work was in progress. As I have said an invite when work completed with some nibbles and wine will put things back to 'normal'.0
