christmas time birthdays

Does anybody have a christmas birthday or have children who do. Does it spoil christmas/birthday having the two so close together. Does it spoil it for other children in the family. Would love to know, trying for a baby and wondering whether to wait. Thanks

My son now 10 has his birthday on the 18th December he was due boxing day:eek: !! he has never really minded the Christmas and birthday being so close in fact when he was little he would always ask for a christmas tree for his birthday!! We have always bought a more expensive gift for the childrens birthdays (daughter is september )as it is more exciting as it is their birthday and only they are getting presents and cake. Now my son is older he choose last birthday and christmas to save up his money he recieved and buy himself a laptop!! so it does have advantages. We bought him a bike in September as his birthday present so he could use it before winter nights set in. I really don't think kids care as long as they get some pressies!! By the way I was always determined never to have a christmas baby (I was a midwife!)

My DS was born on Boxing Day 2005. Not a deliberate act (by me), he was due at the end of January, but my waters broke in the early hours of Christmas Day and he was born half an hour into Boxing Day, five weeks early!!!!!!!! I was glad of that, ie, that he'd missed Christmas Day. It also caused much hilarity among my work colleagues because when I'd left work for the Christmas break two days before, everyone had been joking about me letting them know if I'd had the baby (I wasn't due to finish work until January 12th). I ended up texting everyone at 4am on Christmas morning to say I was on my way in to hospital, but no-one believed me!!!!

So we celebrated his first birthday last Boxing Day and to be honest it made Christmas even more fraught than it is anyway!! I'm not a big fan of Christmas really, but being able to relax on Christmas day night was great. Of course last Christmas I wasn't able to do that - as soon as the children had gone to bed we had to start preparing for the birthday!!!! So my relaxing night is now Boxing day night!!!

Personally I wouldn't aim for a Christmas baby, but as in my case, sometimes these things are out of our control!!

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

My middle daughters birthday is Christmas Day (was due on 17th). She is now 13.

We always intended to have her party in June (when she was christened) but we had another girl whose birthday is in June! With the eldest having her birthday being in May we thought that June for her party would be a bit difficult.

From the age of about 7 we started having her birthday party in July, just before the end of school year with presents and cards from her friends. We call this her half birthday!!

On Christmas Day itself we open some Christmas presents in the morning, then at 1203 (the time she was born) we start her birthday. She opens her family presents and cards. That usually lasts about an hour or so. Tea in the evening is a birthday tea, with birthday cake, etc.

She does sometimes get a bit miffed about having to wait a year and then having Christmas and birthday at the same time but really she gets to have two special days.

My birthday is 15th Dec and when I was younger my Christmas and birthday presents were amalgamated into one larger present (which most of the time it wasn't). We always said that DD birthday and Christmas presents would always be seperate.

A difficult thing about late in the year birthdays is that an outing or trip is much more restricted as a lot of places are shut for the winter.

    HTH.
  • Thanks, I know you can't really plan when a baby is born!

Our daughter ( a mother herself now) was born on the 21st December and we used to give her a half birthday on 21 June so that she did not feel that her proper birthday was swamped.

She and her friends loved it.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • My birthday's Christmas Eve, and I've never had any problem with it. At least nobody forgets what day it's on ;).

As a child, the big advantage was that I never had to go to school on my birthday. Presents were rarely combined (and if they were I got twice the value of present), and the day was celebrated as any "normal" birthday would be.

I don't think I would have liked to have had a replacement party in the summer instead. After all, being a Christmas baby is special, why celebrate it on some other day?

My Mam's birthday is the 19th December.

As a child I know she was hurt as there was little fuss made on her birthday as it was too near Christmas. She never had a birthday party and often recieved "joint presents". However when you're a child, you don't understand this and you just think you only got 1 present instead of 2.

She always remembers childhood birthdays as being a non-event, so we always do something non-Christmassy for her birthday.

If you do have a baby near Christmas, make sure you do something really special to mark the birthdays, so they don't get upset like my Mam did.
Here I go again on my own....
  • My d/s birthday is the 24th Dec and we always make it special for him, we always have a party for him usually the weekend before. On his actual birthday we go somewhere for the day and usually end the day with a family meal at our local italian restaurant. He is made a big fuss off because his birthday is so close to christmas, he always gets separate presents.
