christmas time birthdays

How do you get less schooling if you are born in August?
I was born in August, so one of the youngest in my year, but attended school for the same length of time as everyone else. I left school with 9 GCSE's (3 A's, 4 B's and 2 C's) a higher maths certificate and a City and Guilds, so being born in August never did me any harm.
Some schools take August birthdays at the easter term so I guess they would miss the first two terms of reception. The other thing is that you would have less time at home before starting school. If your birthday is 1st Sept then you would be at home for 5 years until starting school on your fifth birthday, if you are born on 31 Aug you would be at home for 4 years and start school the day after your 4th birthday.
Personally I think there are lots of advantages to being born in the first term (sept-dec). You get more of that valuable preschool experience before starting formal schooling and then when starting school you are at a stage where you are more ready to learn (the difference between a 4yr old and 5yr old is huge, both interlectually and physically). The gap does seem to close by the time children leave infants though.
Interestingly, a high percentage of professional footballers are autumn birthdays and the theory is that they were more likely to be good at sports and picked for teams when young as they were the biggest, strongest, most physically developed in their school year groups.0 -
Yes I meant they get less schooling(than others) in the first year and that's when I think it matters most. They learn the basics then.
I worked in a reception class( and the next year) and you could tell which children had the experience of the whole year's education and the younger ones who didn't get a full year.
It took some of the younger ones a long time to catch up with the others and some never did especially if it was a large class0 -
My dd was born December 19th. We always had a party around that time when she was young. In fact made more fuss of her birthday because it was at Christmas.
Her friend's birthday was in early December and just had one friend to tea. Then a party after Christmas.
When the friend asked why she didn't have her party on her birthday her mother said 'you're like the Queen and have two birthdays!!'0 -
I'm an easter baby and for years all the aunts and uncles would send Cards down with £30 in. With a note saying "Thats £10 each for tim and richs (brothers) easter, and £10 for Kris's birthday and easter". Broke my heart. My 19th this year is actually on easter sunday
And its already started! My aunties are already sending easter money ahead with a note saying its for my birthday too, and my brothers (who are over 30!) are both getting the same for easter! (Theyve just moved out and everyone feels sorry for them, so they get easter presents still).
One of my friends had a christmas birthday and her parents said no joint presents as a rule. And its stuck, shes 19 now and still gets no joint presents. It made sure that her two days were kept seperate, which I think is all that matters
Just dont do like my family did, and treat it as one, or youll break your kiddies heart (like mine was!!)
O.k, end of sob story now....Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
On Christmas Day itself we open some Christmas presents in the morning, then at 1203 (the time she was born) we start her birthday. She opens her family presents and cards. That usually lasts about an hour or so. Tea in the evening is a birthday tea, with birthday cake, etc.
She does sometimes get a bit miffed about having to wait a year and then having Christmas and birthday at the same time but really she gets to have two special days.
My birthday is 15th Dec and when I was younger my Christmas and birthday presents were amalgamated into one larger present (which most of the time it wasn't). We always said that DD birthday and Christmas presents would always be seperate.
A difficult thing about late in the year birthdays is that an outing or trip is much more restricted as a lot of places are shut for the winter.
HTH.
I'm a Christmas baby too and we always had normal Christmas in the morning and as I too was a mid-day baby the birthday celebrations then started in the afternoon when I opened my birthday presents. As a youngster we used to have a birthday party on 5 November when Dad would set off fireworks at the end of the party. Again as you do, I never had joint presents as this wouldn't happen if my birthday was in June.0 -
me (and me OH) both have our birthdays in the first week of January and we both hate it,
nobody ever has any money to go out, or buy you decent presents or people think they can get away with doing joint birthday/christmas presents which i think is awful.
I was 30 this year and it was such a non event, no party... no fuss and no "special presents" like other people get, it sounds like im being really spoilt about it but when other people get such a lot of fuss and your lucky if they remember to send a card just because its a busy and expensive time of year it really doesnt seem fair.
it was worse when we were little...we were never back at school after the christmas break by the time our birthdays come round so you probably hadnt seen your friends so couldnt invite your class to the party... (IF you got a party)
everyone goes out for christmas, then a week later its new years and no one can afford to go out the weekend after, so you miss out,
we had been trying for a baby recently and had decided if it hadnt happened last month that we were going to take a break so the due date would be away from christmas/january (luckily... we struck lucky and our EDD is 9th Nov!)
Ive always had a half birthday in july, I decided as a small child my real birthday wasnt good enough and i wanted to be a summer baby!!
and my close family still get me a card on that day!0 -
We only have a September intake for school here. I didn't know some children could join at other times of the year. Here I go again on my own....0

Schools like to get you in for Sept for budget reasons but you have the right to defer entry until January or Easter if your child is not yet five. Round here schools tend to keep the very youngest children part time until after the easter holidays.0

Mine is Dec 15th too and ditto ditto to the chrismas/birthday pressies. I hated it as a kid and still hate it now. I have never had a birthday party in my life because everyone is too busy with christmassy things. Maybe that's why even to this day I don't like christmas much.
I would wait, I wouldn't plan a christmas baby but in my experience if it's going to happen it will, I've not planned to have kids yet and I have 3 :rotfl::A

My son is the 22nd too. I keep Christmas cards out of the living room until the Birthday cards come down, I do feel sorry for him though ( he doesn't miss out at all) but we do tend to buy thoughout the year then decide what is for his birthday and what is for his christmas - although that is changing now that he is 8 he has started to ask for his favorite.
I feel as though he just gets into playing with his Birthday toys, when they have to get packed way upstairs so Santa doesn't think he has been already!!
When he has parties we tend to arrange them for the first weekend in the month to try to seperate the two, then on his birthday it is Aunts and uncles and our present - he does end up with two cakes too.
It is very special to have a baby at that time of year, but a few months later would be better for them I suppose. I always think once his Birthday and CHristmas is over its a long time coming again. No Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:
