I've got the original Windows CD if that's what you mean, or do I need to create an Acronis boot CD?

  • hi,
i am new to backing up my data and use the windows back up utility on my XP pro, i try to do it every 6 weeks but it asks me if i want to do a normal, daily, incremental or differential back up?
up to now i've probably tried them all but still don't know for sure what i should be doing - can anyone help please?

  • I never back up, unless the file is needed to be back up or it is important that it should have a back up.

    Never.

    Unless it's important (e.g. work/files/photos) and I want to ensure I don't lose it
  • I use Norton Ghost 12 on a W7 machine to an external drive. Set to back up documents every day except Wednesday and Sunday. On the two 'free' days does a complete backup first occurence in the month, then incrementals afterwards. Overkill? More than likely, but having been on the receiving end of the hassle involved when files fail - more than worth it. If the PC isn't turned on at the tiime, it'll do it the next day instead ... takes a couple of minutes.

I use subversion, which is a free program that keeps a version copy of my files each time I 'check in' the file. I back that up the contents of that every month. If I ever want to go back to a previous version of the file, it's a simple task.

The system that I work from is entirely built from free software. Rebuilding the computer is a very simple task. All my configuration data is stored in the version system, for all the personal computers that I look after.

I find this a lot easier to use than full backups as it's a lot easier to backup individual files this way.
  • Not very often at all. Probably should do it more but I've gone 15 years without my various hard drives failing, I'll probably last longer.

.......do a full back up your PC?

The reason I ask is I see so many problems on here that seemingly take forever to resolve, whereas with the big 'if only' of having a back up available, a fix would have been simple.

funny - just thinking about this, this morning! decided to trawl mseas there is a huge amount of knowledge on the forums.
Basically I have a family desktop computer that was set up by my nephew many years ago - don't even know if it has backup/restore discs at all-might be in a box somwhere!
as you can prob tell I am of the 'older' generation and not technical in the slightest. But anyway back to topic - I have e mails, some basic spreadsheets, photos and the kids itunes libraries on it - should I be backing these up and if so HOW?
