I always email my self important doccuments so I can find a copy of the online, but actually backing up the whole hard disc? never, infact when I have time I like to erase everything and reinstall Windows and other vital software, it can take a while but with only the programs on I'm currently using it makes everything run so much quiker afrter, like having a brand new computer.
  • Have a Time Capsule external drive attached to my Mac. It backs up weekly at the moment. I also have extra copies of photos and music on other externals.

I backup my files and media to a mirrored NAS drive, using RSync, on an hourly basics. The NAS is backed up to an external USB caddy every evening for further protection and a selection of important files are also kept on Dropbox as an off-site copy.

My opinion is that you can't backup too often, unless it has a negative effect on your working. It's such a relief knowing your only losing an hours work at the most if your PC goes belly up!

Having a versioning system in place for documents is also a huge help if you have documents to regularly update and edit.
  • I have a clickfree automatic backup drive, it does it all for me, nice and easy :)

I do backup weekly using Handy Backup (handybackup.net), it's reliable automatic backup software. I've used this for years. I particularly like the fact that I can restore files by just going to the backup location and retrieving them without having to use a restore function. This is very important to me.

  • Have recently bought a HP SimpleSave external hard drive for about £60 - 1TB. It is preloaded with a brilliantly simple user interface, you can back up several pcs to it, browse the backed up files, restore at will all or part. And once you are backed up, leave it plugged in and it monitors your pc to add files as appropriate. It does all media files, office files, etc but not system files. The pc itself has a set of discs to restore factory settings - what I want is the data like music and photos that I have added laboriously. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Comes in a variety of sizes like 320gb, 500gb, 1tb and portable or not options.
Some info on this at cnet if you google SimpleSave.:T:T
