  • I have a buffalo external hard disk of 2TB. I'll keep a back up on that every week.
  • hi, needing to back up before i come a cropper.

    know i want
    1. an external device (not internet provider etc)
    2. something that backs up automatically, is easy to use ....
    3. price conscious, but not before the other two factors! and if i'm gonna buy external device and pay money, may as well be half decent and last a longtime (so i'm told!) ...

i hear seagate is good make, looks like the replica version is the one that backs up automatically.

anyone got any advice, recommendations... ?

    thanks in advance

They do exist I assure you. ;)

I'm paranoid. I've got a stack of 6 dead disk drives that have failed at one time or another plus the one out of my daughters iBook.
I have 4 separate drives in my PC (custom built) The first 3 are used for Windows, Work and Storage respectively, the 4th is a 1Tb backup of the other 3. It contains three different backups of each disk.
    1) A full backup using the Windows utility - replaced every week.
    2) A differential backup using Windows - taken every day.
    3) A straight file-to-file incremental copy of each disk using xxcopy (a good, free copy utility) taken every day.
All these backups are automatically scheduled.
I also keep a 16 Gb USB memory stick to keep a rolling 90 day backup of really critical files.
Oh yes, and I've got a couple of external USB drives onto which I occasionally backup stuff.
If the 1Tb drive goes to the happy computer room in the sky, I may have lost my backups, but I should still have the 3 originals and I'll sure as h*ll replace it ASAP.
    Sent from my abacus.
  • I backup regularly, and I also make sure that there is an off-site backup for the majority of my data - as we have been burgled before and had backup drives stolen.

Please do not over-look any freebies also: Windows 7 System Image Backup is a worthy contender to any paid-for versions

I do an automatic backup every day. My documents are too important for me to loose. Also use my laptop for work.

If anyone needs tips on getting free automated online backup let me know.
