    Some insight here http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/06/26/rbs_natwest_ca_technologies_outsourcing/

I have heard it is unlikely Ulster will be sorted out this week, why is it taking so long when Nat West/RBS seems to be substantially sorted?

Because RBS/Natwest are much bigger and are more likely to make the news on the mainland. Shows you how important Ulster Bank customers are to them...

No Group Chief Executive message on Ulster Bank website like RBS & Nat West - says a lot! http://www.natwest.com/personal.ashx

We continue to work through the backlog of payments caused as a result of the IT issues experienced in RBS Group. We're making progress on this and are confident that this will help us restore a full service for the start of next week in Ulster Bank.
    ..
What is the situation with payments due to be made from my account?

Unfortunately any bill payments made in branch from Wednesday 20th have not yet been processed. If you experience any fees or interest as a result of this please contact us.

We are also unable to make any domestic or international payments to non-Ulster Bank accounts at this time. If you have a payment you need to make over the next few days please use an alternative means of doing this e.g. paying at another bank or in a post office. If you are due to pay an Ulster Bank credit card bill please contact the Card Centre, the number of which is on the reverse of your card.

Direct debits due from your accounts from Wednesday 20th have not yet been taken.

So, problems started last Wednesday (a week ago) and may not be resolved until the start of next week.

Also, seems like Ulster Bank is off the UK banking grid as you cannot make payments out to another UK or Foreign bank and direct debits since last wednesday will have failed - great, black marks on credit ratings for anyone with a DD!

(You can get cash directly out at bank branches and ATMs but your balance may not be correct.)
  • so which bank are you all moving to after this mess??

A serious error committed by an "inexperienced operative" caused the IT meltdown which crippled the RBS banks last week, a source familiar with the matter has told The Register. Job adverts show that at least some of the team responsible for the blunder were recruited earlier this year in India following IT job cuts at RBS in the UK.
"You pay peanuts, you get monkeys" sums this situation extremely well. Experienced UK IT experts get paid off and RBS in their wisdom think they will save money by outsourcing it to India. This must be the biggest "own goal" by a UK bank in their history.

A bank that was already incurring massive losses, could this be the end of RBS? Certainly could be the end of Ulster Bank, start shopping around folks!

I think the problem here is they do not have sufficient staff here to do the catch up work. Ulster Bank have been extremely quiet on how they are tackling the backlog.

Ulster Bank are currently going through a downsizing program, paying off hundreds of their most experienced staff with redundancy packages.
