Why don't you do standing orders instead? Easier than having to log in to different banks

They worry me too much. I don't want a SO activated before I got the money in there, and I don't want the money in there longer than necessary, and then there's weekends and bank holidays to think about. If I do it myself, its all done the day I get paid and back in my main account before tea :)

Plus it gives me a chance to actually check the accounts have in them what I expect, and nobody has tried to commit any fraud/etc.

Fair enoughs. Im considering opting for paper statements for all my accounts, just to check for fraud etc... One/two accounts being online only I can manage, but when I have five that are online only,it makes it less manageable - possibly another two to add as well

I like to keep my main account in credit of at least 1K, where I can move money in/out with relative ease

You should get an account with yorkshire building society as they have a money manager which allows you to check your account balances with most other banks and building society on one page and only needs only a username and password to check in. Much quicker than going to each individually!!

I really don't keep these amounts lying around.
I'm not saying that just to argue with you I really don't.
I pay all my bills straight away and leave myself with £150 to last the month. I guess I could pay that in and out 7 times, but I'd be going clsoe to Zero and have to watch it carefully.

I make large savings by spending time on these forums.
Not in every single discussion I grant you, but oevrall it's time very well spent.

Yes and some of us thought it was worth pointing out the hoops and that there are better deals available. I stick by that. If you don't agree then that's up to you.

    No that's not right.
If you spend £300 on Halifax you get £5 cashback right = £60 per annum.
If you spend £300 on Capital one instead at 1% you would get £36, so the benefit of switching in that case is only £24.
You cannot do your credit card spending twice and get £84 !!!

Of course I'm using Aqua so I would get £100 so I am also making the point that most of the time there are better deals than Halifax out there.

I've accepted the merit of your points, why can't you accept the merit of mine/ours/others?

Shall we just agree to disagree rather than waste more time?
Others can decide for themsleves on the merits of the arguments and how it applies to their personal circumstances. I have no issue with what anyone else decides as everyone's situation is differnt.

I know you're not deliberately trying to argue (and feel free not to reply if it sounds like I am - I don't mean to!), but transfer the money before you pay the bills. I'm sure you can spare 2 minutes between payday and bill payments!

No it's definitely right. You'll get £60 from the current account regardless of your spending - then it's up to you to work out whatever you'll get from credit cards.

Because I honestly cannot see any merit in your points at all! You open an account, £1000 goes in, £1000 goes out, you get paid £5. That's it. As I've said before (and you've pointed out) - it's purely up to you what you do. I just think it's rather odd that someone who goes to the trouble of trying to put every spare penny into appropriate ISAs and NSI accounts finds the prospect of using a Halifax Reward account too much hard work!

First Direct do as well, and you don't need to be a customer (don't know if you do for YBS?).

I have 5K in a Halifax Online Saver @ 2.8% if I ever need it. Supports faster payments in and out, so I can move money into any of my current accounts in seconds, should I need it. Not the best interest rate (well, probably is now), but for instant instant access, you can't really beat it.

Funnily enough, I used to have a YBS account, but I closed it down. Should have kept it now

    For instant access I use
Derbyshire Building Society NetSaver Issue 4
3.06% incl fixed bonus of 2.06% gross p.a. paid until 30 November 2013
You can transfer money into your account via electronic transfer or Standing Order from another bank or building society (don't need to come from nominated account)
