  • I know you can cuz obviously frozen chips are potatoes . But I dont know how to go about it. I've got some baking potatoes that are going to go off. I thought I could cut them into potato wedges and freeze them, but do i need to partially cook them or anything?

    Thanks x

    Hi WillpowerFree,

Raw potato doesn't freeze well but there's an earlier thread that should help with freezing different types of potato so I'll add your thread to it to keep the replies together.

  • Hi I'd have said chop up before par-boiling. I made homemade potato wedges yesterday (for the first time, very proud of myself :j) and the recipe said to chop then par-boil. Also i'd have thought that if you par-boiled them first then they'd be a bit squidgy to chop easily?

I think you can do it either way. I prefer to par-boil the whole potatoes as they don't get so 'wet' and when lifted out of the water and any water on them soon evaporates. It does mean you need to leave them a little while before cutting them up as they can be too hot to handle. ;)

I par-boiled some potatoes last week, they were cut into roasting potato size. Then froze on a tray and bagged up when frozen. If I roast them from frozen would I use the ususal oven temperature (about 220 degrees) or a lower temp until thawed then whack up the heat?
    Thanks.

I have alot of potatoes that are going to end up in the bin if I dont do something soon!!!

I thought about freezing them, can I Just peel, chop and bag them, then chuck them in the freezer or do I have to cook them first????

I really dont want to waste them and there are too many to use up quickly..........

Mash freezes well, particularly if you put in butter and milk. When it defrosts it looks a bit dodgy, but you just have to reheat slowly and stir in any "water" - and if you can add more butter, that always helps!

Other than that, how about cutting your potatoes into wedges, putting them in a dish with a couple of spoonfuls of oil, some pepper and salt and maybe some mixed herbs. Once they have got a bit of "coating" (that's rather a big word for what happens to them, to be honest). freeze them on a baking tray so they don't all stick together and then transfer to a freezer bag. You can cook them from frozen in the oven like oven chips.

You can also freeze baked potatoes...I am reliably informed. I think it sounds bleuch to be honest!

I always keep potatoes in the fridge and they keep for ages as opposed to being kept in the kitchen loose.
