Freezing potatoes

    So can't I just chop the potatoes into chips or wedges etc., put them in the bags and deep freeze straight away?

    The soup is a good idea though. But how to cook it once it is out of the freezer?

    And I have never frozen mashed potato - do you defrost first then if you want to use it for e.g. cottage pie or just mash?

    If you just freeze them 'plain' they will look grey and pretty horrible when you come to use them and you may well finish up just chucking them away! They will keep appearance and be easier to finish if you pre-cook them in some way as suggested.

    Re the soup you can just let it thaw out and re heat or microwave it, or heat it from frozen in the microwave, you'll need to give it a good stirring as it will tend to separate out whist frozen.

    As for the mash, you can defrost and then use as for fresh, or if you freeze small portions you can cook from frozen (many of the frozen 'ready meals' with a mash potato content just have the potato portion in the tray to be microwaved or oven cooked from frozen)

    If you bake potatoes (in oven with something else or microwave) you can freeze them. To use, I defrosted mine then put them in the oven briefly to crisp up. They tasted great, better than cooking from scratch.

    I have frozen par-boiled potatoes and then later used them for roasties. Came out fine.

    Thought it was better then wasting them.

  • I was just wondering if I could freeze potatoes, after I've cut them into french fries. What would I have to do to make that work.

    Hi :)
    I usually cook more of a meal than we eat here, so I try to freeze a portion for later use. But the timesaving element of that..reheating it in the microwave..doesn`t seem to work so well with frozen tatties. When I reheat them, they are dry, strange tasting and not very nice in texture. Does anyone know, please, what I`m doing wrong, or is it inevitable with potatoes and the microwave?
    Would it make any difference if I froze them mashed, for example?
  • Sorry, don't know about the freezing part but what I usually do is save potatoes in the fridge and make a potato salad the next day (or even the day after that). Have also put them in an omlette. Maybe also a bubble and squeak (although I've never made that so not sure!)
