He tried all the main banks. Best he got was some kind of esavings account with one (Halifax I think).

Then there is something dodgy on his credit file. Really. Beyond the defaults and beyond the debts, there is something there.

I really cannot reiterate this enough: get the financial links removed. Get him to get his credit reports.

They may have done originally, but he cleared that up when he sent proof of his entitlement i'd have thought.

I'll sort out getting a copy of his credit report at some point, right now he doesn't have a major need for a bank account, more that he just want's one.

I went through all his paperwork etc when I moved in and it was all just debt letters from various people that were dated a long time before i moved in. He'd thrown any recent ones away unopened. So i binned all the out of date ones & I deal with them as they arrive now.

When he's got full time work (or his business going) we're going to save up what we can and start paying off his debts, the ones we can track down anyway.

I know you love this guy but you should really check his credit report.
  • I'll sort out getting a copy of his credit report so we can see what's on there.

I just realised why we're showing up as being linked. I totally forgot, I've got him as a named card holder on my credit card.

He hasn't used the card yet so we forgot about it until we just unearthed it.

I tried using it to get an online credit report but no luck. Experian even let you apply for the £2 statutory (sp?) report online but it said there was an error with the application.

    I can't work it out.

If he is a secondary card holder it will not create a financial link on your credit report. Credit cards can only be in sole names only. You will be responsible for the whole debt on the card, not him.

What will create a financial link is a joint Bank Account, mortgage, or loan. Links can also be set up in error and obviously if one has you should file a "Notice of Disassociation" But as you have a credit card it's unlikely such a link exists.

It is likely that the payment method is part of the initial checks that Experian do in order to ensure you are entitled to see the credit report, cause the principal credit card holder (that being you) is in a different name to the report you are requesting it's likely they will reject it as your card details will not show on his report.

Best bet is to send £2 postal orders to Experian, Equifax and Call Credit.

There are 3 agencies and all could potentially report 3 different views of data they hold, though usually the same but I would not be able to guarantee it.

Remember it only takes a joint credit application to create a financial associate accepted or declined.
So even if you don't have a joint bank bank account, past application with both names automatically Puts link on.

You should tell them your Full Name, Date of Birth and all addresses for the last 6 years asking for a copy of your current statutory credit report and allowing them 7 working days to send this in the post.

    Some useful addresses:

    Equifax Plc
    Credit File Advice Centre
    PO Box 1140
    Bradford
    BD1 5US

    Callcredit Limited
    Consumer Services Team
    PO Box 491
    Leeds
    LS3 1WZ

    Experian Limited
    Consumer Help Service
    PO Box 8000
    Nottingham
    NG80 7WF

Perhaps it may be worth getting 2 reports one for you and one for your partner, send them separately
  • Thanks, I'll get them both and see what they tell us.

Some providers do indeed do this.

For example, M&S say they will create a financial association if you enter your partner/spouse details on a credit application...even if they don't take an additional card.
