Fiancee Refused Bank Account(s)

My fianc!e has been refused every bank account he has applied for. He even applied for one with NatWest that was supposedly one that they didn't do a credit check with... then they said he failed the credit check?!

I tried opening a joint account but got turned down for a current, then they sent an application for another one and i'm waiting to hear back about it.

How is he supposed to get anywhere without a bank account?? So many things now need you to have one it is a joke, there must be a bank account thats free of charge for people with really bad credit ratings?!

Anyone have any ideas??

what do his credit files say ?
    electoral roll?
    fraud markers?
    defaults
    bankruptcy

and do NOT apply for joint a/cs with him as you are liable to trash your own credit record

I suspect you partner will know why he is being declined for even the most basic bank accounts, if however he doesn’t then he would need to look at his credit report which should point to any issues regarding his application.

Banks don’t like taking on risky customers and even the basic accounts banks offer were at the request of the Government who wanted to pay all benefits electronically. So it is a little worrying that your partner is even being declined for these.

Also if your partner is not on the voter role or can’t be traced at any permanent address this may also cause the bank to decline the request. Government legislation demands that banks do specific background checks on new customers before opening an account.

I would also back up the previous poster and say do not take out a joint account as this may well have a detrimental effect on your own credit rating.
  • Before we got together he didn't pay his bills & got into debt with them all, I put it down to depression or his bipolar. So now his credit rating is terrible.

Mine used to be good but I let it slip by falling behind on some bills, I think we will be denied the joint one anyway, I don't think he's on the electoral roll but I thought I wasn't then it turned out I was :-S

If he is your financial associate then he will drag you down with his bad credit rating but as you are falling behind on payments I am sure your credit rating is not much better.

Getting a current account you have to have an ok credit rating but to get a basic account you just need a pulse and ID.

He has both and still got turned down for a basic account. He's going to wait until it's been six months and then try again.

I fell behind with a few payments of things and now I'm trying to catch up with them. I've caught up with two, there's just two left to catch up with now :-)

You need to see his credit file because if he does have a default where he decided he wouldn't pay a debt then trying in 6 months won't change a thing as a default stays on for 6 years.

Get him to check his credit report ASAP.

Everywhere he's looked to check out his credit report says he needs a bank account to sign up :-S

What happened with the basic account was he applied for it but there was a problem because it said on the system that he'd already applied recently so they had to process the application differently which ended in a credit check. I think that's it anyway. It was confusing.

Which is why he's going to wait and try again. We are trying to get all his debts paid off to fix his credit rating too.

In other words he got declined and ask to reapply in 6 months and this was for a basic account, TBH there are some real nasties lurking on your other halfs file and applying in 6 months would be a waste of time.

Hi there Watermelon88. He needs to get a basic bank account as indicated. Off hand, I know that most banks provide these due to government pressure and guidance - a basic bank account has no credit associated with it so no credit check is done. However, a bank will do a security check on one or more CRA for fraud prevention and identity verification. Your finances needs to look on his report to see if there are any fraud markers on his file (ask the banks you have applied to which CRA they used if they haven't already told you). It could also be if he's not on the electoral role or the name s showing incorrect.

I'll get him to put himself on the electoral roll before trying again.

I know he's got major debts with Santander and a few phone companies. Even he can't remember all his debts.

He used to be the sort that didn't think he'd ever settle down so didn't worry about his credit rating or paying his bills, he used to just ignore all the letters etc.

Now he regrets it as it's making things harder for us with everything!

I on the other hand always had a good credit rating ... until I met him and he lured me to the dark side!

I'm back on track almost now though so all's well that ends well I guess :-)
