I know he's got major debts with Santander and a few phone companies. Even he can't remember all his debts.
He used to be the sort that didn't think he'd ever settle down so didn't worry about his credit rating or paying his bills, he used to just ignore all the letters etc.
Now he regrets it as it's making things harder for us with everything!
I on the other hand always had a good credit rating ... until I met him and he lured me to the dark side!
I'm back on track almost now though so all's well that ends well I guess :-)
Hmm, I'm trying to think of possible reasons they would decline him.
1. He has banked with this bank before and they will not take him on as a customer again (usually if they had to write off a bad debt).
2. He has moved house or otherwise fled to avoid his financial responsibilities. It happens - but when it does the people chasing the debts lodge a "gone away" marker on his credit file. Banks really don't like to see these.

Your partner is hiding something... even if you question him doubt he'll tell you everything.
no one gets declined like that (unless its really bad debt/credit card etc type of thing)
he owes money.• HSBC (Main A/C)
• Halifax Back up A/C
• Lloyds (Spending) A/C
• RBS Back up A/C
• Barclays Old A/C
• Nationwide Old A/C0 -
He's not hiding anything.
He's lived here four years. He's got a lot of debts with a lot of different companies, but he can't remember all of them.
I know of a couple of his debts from letters that have come through since I've lived here, and ones he remembers and told me about.
We had a letter about the joint account today, it was rejected. It was for a current account which they already turned us down for then a few days later sent us an application form :-S
I'm glad though as you're right, a joint account would make things worse for me, although I think it's too late as I checked my credit report the other day and his names attached to it.Total Weight Loss Progress = -17lbs

My christ, a post where you're not talking crap and are actually correct. I think a pig just flew past my window.
OP: your fiance needs to look at his credit file. You can obtain these by sending off a signed request to the credit reference agencies with a £2 postal order. If he is being rejected for basic bank accounts (not just standard bank accounts, basic bank accounts) then there are some real nasties lurking on his credit file which he is not disclosing to you. Not just defaults, either, since most BBAs can be opened with defaults, some even if you're bankrupt.
Also, if you have no joint products (and based on what you say, I really strongly suggest for your own good that you do not take out any with this person) you should write to the credit reference agencies yourself asking you to disassociate yourself financially from him as you have no joint accounts and should not be financially linked. Otherwise your credit rating will be linked to his, even if you don't have any shared products.urs sinserly,

what do his credit files say ?
electoral roll?
fraud markers?
defaults
bankruptcy
and do NOT apply for joint a/cs with him as you are liable to trash your own credit record
Not on Electoral Roll or Fraud Markers would be my guess, defaults and bankruptcy will have no affect on a basic bank account.
Totally agree about the joint bank account, avoid like the plague0 -
How? This would only happen when you have made some joint financial commitment.watermelon88 wrote: »..... although I think it's too late as I checked my credit report the other day and his names attached to it.
It is academic, as after you are married you will become jointly responsible for all his debts."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Both of our names are on the water account. That might be it.
He doesn't know what's on his credit report, he's never checked it. He ran up a lot of debts with a lot of companies and has had debt collectors after him etc, but nothing other than that. I think one of his debts went to court or something but we never heard anything else about it.
It was to do with the NHS, they said he wasn't entitled to free opticians when he was, once he proved it we never heard back.
Other than that, there's nothing worse than a few debt collectors.Total Weight Loss Progress = -17lbs

Best advice is to get hold of the credit report and check, without that you're just speculating. The order of nasties run something like this
Fraud (The only one to cause issues with Basic Bank Accounts)
Bankruptcy / IVA / DMP
CCJ
Default
Late Payments
Also if not on electoral roll get registered cause that will cause problems with opening accounts as they cannot check you out.
PS Could NHS have registered a fraud, you wont know unless you check.0 -
They may have done originally, but he cleared that up when he sent proof of his entitlement i'd have thought.
I'll sort out getting a copy of his credit report at some point, right now he doesn't have a major need for a bank account, more that he just want's one.
I went through all his paperwork etc when I moved in and it was all just debt letters from various people that were dated a long time before i moved in. He'd thrown any recent ones away unopened. So i binned all the out of date ones & I deal with them as they arrive now.
When he's got full time work (or his business going) we're going to save up what we can and start paying off his debts, the ones we can track down anyway.Total Weight Loss Progress = -17lbs
