As @dc_scotland has mentioned, you should use the Upgrade option in online banking and follow the step-by-step instructions carefully - that's what I do.
Since April this year, I have upgraded from Issue 13 to Issue 14, then Issue 14 to Issue 15. This new issue (16) is next on my list of things to be upgraded.
You should retain the same account number and sort code, if you upgrade.
Santander calculates the accrued interest on the previous issue and credits it to your new issue. I have received interest of £165 (approx) so far this tax year by doing the upgrades.
