Re my comment about id - I phoned them when I got into work and they said they do an electronic search when I applied, which should be OK as it did not ask for further id. However, they may ask for further ID when I get my welcome pack.Edible geranium0

Generally speaking is it better to have a fixed rate or a variable rate? Is one better than the other?Debtfree!0

Other than the access question it boils down to whether interest rates are rising or falling over the period of investment - if you don't need immediate access to your funds and rates are falling then a fix would be the better choice but if rates are rising then a variable would be better.
At the moment, the best rates available are falling because there is cheap money available from government for lenders to lend so banks won't pay high rates on savings but there is no way of knowing when or at what savings rates that will stop.
My own view is that savings rates are unlikely to rise for the foreseeable future with a possible glimmer of hope when the ISA season starts - but I wouldn't bank on even that.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Hi if you want to go down the fixed ISA route, it is likely that the fixed rates get better during the ISA season (March-April) - at least this has been the case mostly over the last few years.
So unless you find an exceptionally good deal, personally I would not get a fixed ISA until March when the rates are likely to be a bit better.0 -

Hi,
I have added this to my weekend updates. The ISAs list on the first page has been updated with all the variable and fixed rate ISA changes.
Merry Christmas everyone! :xmassign:Please call me 'Kazza'.0 -
Thank you, Kazza, for another year of keeping the web's best cash ISA list alive! Not entirely without the help of other MSEers, I hasten to add - - but pulling it all together in one place is just a superb and really helpful effort, which is down to just you. I for one really appreciate your initative.
Wishing you all a merry Xmas, and outstanding ISA rates come April (for the right reasons, not the wrong ones)!0
