Okay, so I have just got off the phone to C&G, having spoken to a CSA (Rowena Palmer) who was very definite that I would have to be placing the current tax year's subscription with them to open this account!

That could either be via an ISA transfer (or transfers) from another provider(s) which include the 09/10 £3600, or by a depositing £3600 with them and then arranging transfer of previous years ISAs from other providers.

C&G will not accept a transfer on its own to open this account unless new money in the form of this (09/10) years funds are included!

I think I need to go back to the Cheltenham and Gloucester branch where I opened the account as looking back at the documents I was given I have:

    a) a receipt showing 2 years fixed rate isa a/c opened zero balance money

    b) a printed form showing my details but it says I am applying for a cash isa for the current year (which I did not ask to do)

I have not yet subscribed to this year's ISA, thinking I would wait a while, but am worried now that my transfer could be invalid - not sure if the funds have yet been moved into the new account although they have left my previous account with the Alliance and Leicester.

Alliance and Leicester took over 2 months to arrange my previous transfer to them so I was glad to be able to transfer my isa out of there.

I will update this thread when I get further information

    Hi Kazza

I have been back to the branch - the adviser who set up my account was not there. However girl on the counter advised that she has only set up a few of these Isa's and that she had requested payment of the current years funds in each case. However, she advised that my transfer from Alliance and Leicester had been received and that I would get confirmation from head office

I have now had a statement from head office with all details of the new Isa with the transferred funds - so, was a mistake made by the adviser who set up my new account? It would appear the answer is possibly!

The mystery deepens! It appears that if I lived anywhere near a C&G branch, I might stand a chance, as I don't the only option I have is the phone and a form back to head office, so it would appear that I am stuffed!

Seems like a definitive answer from someone high up in C&G is needed?

Does anyone know anything about the 5% ISA at the A&L? Is there a catch?

As far as I can tell A&L do not offer an ISA paying 5% (or am I missing something?).

***Note that Alliance & Leicester and Abbey (both part of the Santander Group) are offering an ISA called 'Super Direct ISA' paying 5.50%. These ISAs stipulate that you must fund a new or existing qualifying investment account with at least an equal amount. Neither of the two ISAs are good value for this reason and should be avoided.
