Hi
Wondering if anyone on this thread has some tips to help me.
I need to lose weight but I'm also horribly busy and horribly hard up. I'm a PhD student whose funding finished last march and who has to submit in 2 months time. I have to work to earn money but also have to get the thing written which means the only time I'm home is to sleep. (Monday I was in the office until after 1am editing a chapter then up to teach at 10 on tuesday)
In the past I've found that I can combine weight loss with either poverty or stress but not both. For example If I prepare lots of slimming foods at home it's quite cheap but at the moment I don't have time and the cheapest way to have lunch out involves bread which is my weight nemesis.
In the past I've followed slimming world and the fat burner diet successfully but I just don't have time to prepare foods at the moment. (I can't afford the classes for SW either at the moment) I really don't want to have to resort to all of the additives in pasta packets either (SW stand by). - I have a microwave at my office and a fridge. so I can heat things here but at the moment no time to prepare things at home to bring in. This week I've been buying soups and smoothies but that works out really expensive unless they're full of e numbers which make me feel tired and listless.
As you can probably tell I'm pretty stressed about all this so any tips will be helpful

oh and I'm also a vegetarianMuMu0 -
Hi MuMu. :j
Well I'm always on a budget so that's something we have in common.
There are plenty of things you can slim on without spending much time or money. It does mean you'll have to be more disciplined as if you buy ready made food you'll have to choose wisely. It may also mean your food could get a little repetitive at times, but I guess that's just one of those things.
Firstly, eat loads of fruit. Cheap (apples, oranges, nanas etc are cheap. Exotic fruit & grapes are more expensive. That's what I meant about repetive as I can't afford mangoes/grapes etc. But it isn't a problem). How about a yoghurt, banana, apple or a handful of dried fruit for breakfast. Or a small bowl cereal with skimmed milk? Both super quick, no preparation and cheap. Have a fruit bowl on your desk for when you get the munchies.
You say you have a microwave at work. My staple lunch is either some soup and ryvitas. Or a jacket potato takes 8 minutes topped with cottage cheese, beans, anything instant like that. And always fruit.
Bread is not fattening as long as you eat it in moderation, the same as anything. 2 slices of bread would be 3 WW points - a jacket is 2.5 points. So similar really. In your fridge keep a loaf of sliced bread, a fat free dressing/chutney/low fat mayo or similar to use instead of butter. Then a pot of healthy filling such as low fat cream cheese or hummous. You could even buy a lettuce/cucumber and slice a bit into for variety. Only takes 5 minutes.
For dinner. Don't know if you eat fish? Frozen fish fillets are cheap, take a few minutes in the microwave with some microwaved frozen veggies. Stir frys are quick once you've cut the veggies, or look in the supermarket for reduced ready prepared ones. Pasta and a low fat tomato sauce? Tescos Value is OK, especially if you throw in a few extras like mushrooms.
I haven't personally got one but a slow cooker may be an option for you? Look on the Old style board for inspiration - it seems you chuck stuff in, leave it on all day and come back to a healty cooked meal. You could even 'cook once, eat twice' We cook enough for 2 days, and eat it the next day too. Again repetitve for some but we manage OK. Keeps the cost down too.
That's the kind of things I can think of at the moment as a guideline......
Good luck!New year, no debt! Debt free date - 02/01/07 :j :j :j0 -
Thanks Alfietinker
Some useful things which I sort of knew but needed to hear from someone else. I suppose my main problem is, as you say, the repetetive nature of it all. Especially as I'm never home for dinner so it's a case of lunch options repeated at dinner time... And I don't eat fish either which limits me even more.
I think I'll probably have to sacrifice a half day everyweek to cook things in advance to heat up in the microwave. Has anyone got any suggestions on that?
I used to get the quorn mini snack fillet things which were tikka flavoured as they make a good packed lunch food but I never see them reduced anymore. Has anyone tried making these themselves with the big fillets? Quorn is a great slimming food. and if I've got time in the mornings I try to grill some for lunch but at the moment that just aint happening. Has anyone here ever microwaved them?MuMu0 -
I slipped off the dieting wagon a few months ago and I need to come back to the fold. I feel like a right biffa and my desire for chocolate cake and naughty things like that isn't helping. Nor is the fact that I have some rather brat like children in the class that I'm teaching at the moment.
At least once a week I go to the little coffee shop in the small town that I live in to "commiserate" with myself. This obviously isn't helping at all, so I need to do something about it.
My OH weighs less than me and his sisters are both slim. Not stick thin, but slim. As we're getting married next year, I want to look super-gorgeous but I can only see myself as I am.
Help me find my will power again please!!!?

But if you can do a little more walking or move more in some other way, and / or eat a little less or at least less of the 'wrong' foods, the theory is that you will kick start your metabolism again.
What's happened is that your body has got used to what you're doing, and has settled down there.
Of course, you should check whether you're now at a good weight: have you checked your BMI lately? And your waist measurement? I think women especially often want to be at the lower end of 'normal' (or even below it!) rather than at a good weight for their height.
Me? I'd settle for overweight rather than obese ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
On the same note as above
If you're following your plan religiously and know you're not committing any 'crimes' then you could also try eating just a little bit more of something healthy. This worked for me when I lost weight before, my body had got used to eating smaller amounts and stabilised. I ate just a tad more and the weight started to shift again.New year, no debt! Thanks guys. I have gone back to work 6 weeks ago and I think that may be part of the problem as I work evenings so my meal time is different all the time. Lots of people have commented on me looking slimmer so maybe I'm losing inches rather than weight. Still it's better than the weight I was when I started (nearly 13 stone), I'm now 11 6, so I've done well overall.WW Gold Member, trying to maintain !!!Hayden born July 07Tabitha born April 05Poppy born July 030
