Caterina - last time I went to the nurse and she weighed me in and congratulated me on my weight loss since I had last been in (6 months before), she didn't offer me SW classes on prescription but mentioned about slimming pills which she could provide me with if I start to find it tough going on the diet. This quite horrified me as I have heard some really nasty stories about becoming addicted to those types of pills and also bad side effects. I will ask next time I go though about exercise on prescription as that would certainly be cheaper than my gym membership - which I gave to myself as a Christmas pressie!

    Hi VelvetGlove

I wonder if the pills she mentioned are Orlistat (I think this is the name), if it is, I have heard quite a lot of horror stories about them but not about addiction - the addictive ones are amphetamine-based apetite suppresants and I don't think that GP practices would use them! I think you can only get these at unscrupulous 'slimming clinics' that charge a fortune for them.

If it is the Orlistat ones she is talking about, these tablets sort of prevent you from absorbing fats in your gut, but the side effects are gruesome, as I heard that a lot of people end up with very loose bowels and one of the nastiest side effects is that they can involuntarily poo a greasy slime - a bit like becoming incontinent! YEURGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I'd rather be fat quite frankly! My doctor offered them to me but told me all about the side effects and I turned them down. I am sure you can find out more about them, they must be good for someone otherwise they would not be prescribed. Check it out!

Love to all you dieters, hope you are doing well (I am - sort of ;) - I think that soon I need to jump on a set of scales to find out what I weigh!).

Before I start, I must tell you all that my home scales agreed with the hospital scales yesterday, so I cheered up! And I even found a site which said I hadn't been obese for a while, which was even better, I think it was on netdoctor.
Sue - I'm sorry to hear about your op being postponed :( Have they said how long for or will you have to go back in for check ups until they think your blood pressure is down low enough for them? I bet you are so angry as it is quite a thing to be psyching yourself up for then to suddenly be left flat and in limbo again. Go kick some Doctor-butt and get them to do your darn op or else face the wrath of MSE'ers! Which reminds me, I heard that kcik boxing was quite a good workout but I'm scared to try it as I'm really not very fit at all. Any else tried kickboxing?
Well I've put more details on the Health board so I won't bore you all here, the summary is I've got to have my BP tested 3 times next week, see the GP and if it's not down go onto medication for 3 weeks. Then they schedule the op once my BP is reducing.

To be fair to them, they are concerned for my safety. The op is not essential, to me it's just the best of 3 options, one of which is 'wait and see'. I'm actually in pretty good shape (for me), and the brain is not misbehaving too much right now. I just wish that someone had flagged up 6 months ago that I ought to get checks like this carried out, but I've not had to go to GP very often, not at all for this problem, and it never crossed my tiny little mind. (Which is daft, because I know my mum's BP is very high - she says 30 years of medication and they've not been able to get it down!) And I've dealt with the impending op by either not thinking about it or going shopping - again, you'll see that from the Health Board! :rotfl:

So, to keep cheerful and relaxed: there's less rush to complete my collection of new bras; I've got my pink pyjamas and very nice they are too; and I'm taking a relaxing week off work the week after next. Maybe I will buy some new trousers - although I am definitely going to lose weight if I am serious about reducing BP through diet and exercise alone!

    Hello again.
I started on here about 2 or 3 months ago with plans of loosing tons (literally ;) ) of weight.
I lost 4 pound in two weeks, then forgot about it and reverted back to my old eating habits.
I have of course regained all the lost weight, and some extra.
Like Austin I am about twice my ideal weight.

I really want to shift the weight and am trying again. Only this time I have an added incentive - I'm engaged, and my nan has told me that if I loose 2 stone she will give me £1000 for my wedding dress. :j

I'm going to try and be sensible in what I eat and increase my levels of excersize. I had to sell my car last month as it was falling apart and I couldn't afford to keep repairing it, so I have to walk more now anyway.

I hoping the embarressment of comming on here and owning up to how little I've lost, or the joy of being able to report a big loss will give me extra motivation. Obiously my nan wants regular updates too, so I have no excuse for forgetting or giving up.

welcome back sleepy, hope your fiance is also giving you loads of encouragement and not eating pizza and drinking beer in front of you!

Hope you're not trying to lose the 2 stone too quickly: go for sustainable! I have lost my first stone over about 6 months, but most of it went in the first four months, and I just hung onto the fact that at least I wasn't putting any of it back on again!

Walking more will help a lot (and save money!), that's really all I do.

See your GP and ask about exercise on prescription if you think that would help. They key is to eat less and move more, doesn't matter how you do the moving!

    All the best!

    My fiance is wonderfull.
He is eating the same meals as me, and even seems to be enjoying the salad!
Every time I get a chocolate craving he reminds me why I shouldn't go and get any and suggests fruit instead.

I'm really lucky, he loves me as I am but he'll help me loose the weight too.

Everytime I want something I shouldn't (today it was chocolate muffins) I remember the wedding dress - it helps a lot.

I don't really fancy exercise on prescription or joining a gym as I'd rather excercise privately (my bum is just too wobbly to move in public). So instead I'm planning lots of walks, and exercise at home.

Orlistat is the medical name for these pills. They are called Xenical.

The side effects only occur for those people WHO DONT STICK to a LOW FAT DIET. I cannot emphasise that enough. I am always hearing of people bing told of nasty side effects but it isnt always the case. This is no miracle pill. You cannot expect to take these pills, eat a poor diet and still lose weight.

They act by blocking 1/3rd of the fat you eat. Normal fat RDA for women is 70g, On Xenical you should be having 30-40g. Each meal containing no more than 12g.

Feel free to PM me if ANYONE wants to know anything else. I am not a health professional but I do have personal experience of these pills.

Hi everyone. Following the mix up with the scales last week I maintained this week. Our consultant brought some new scales so we ignored last weeks weight. Lots of us felt we should have had a free week but were told by a very "Snotty" official that we stayed for the meeting so we shouldnt get a free week. Not very happy but hey life goes on.

My suit for the wedding is pink and white blouse and skirt. The skirt has a slight split up the side and a handkercheif hem. The blouse is tapered at the waist:jand the sleeves come to half way down my arm. I also have a pale pink shawl in case it is a bit chilly.
Here goes another week good luck to everyone the password for SW website is BREAD.
Once again thanks to velvetglove for her continued support

    Guess what, folks

I am fitting into my daughter's size 16 jeans - they are too big for her but a nice snug (tight-ish but ok) fit for me!

Not very money-saving as I had to replace her pair with a new pair - but not breaking the bank as I found a lovely pair of slimline Lee Cooper ones for her in TK MAXX for £7.00. Everybody is happy!

I must be doing something right, then! YIPPEE! I hope to manage to continue this way! Thanks for the support everybody.

Love and best wishes to all of you

Hi, would anyone mind if I joined in too?

I lost 4 stone about 10 years ago but over the past few years (since I turned 30) I've struggled wth my weight with it yo-yoing by around a stone and a half.

Tried loosing weight last year but found that even when being sensible not much was shifting. My, ahem, motions were loose then nothing moved :o so I wondered if I had a food intolerence as it was only noticeable whenever I bought sandwiches and coffee for lunch. Then I started doing more home cooking as I was fed up spending so much money on convenience food and wanted to be healthier. Found home made soup at lunchtime and home cooked evening meal much more satisfying than the prepackaged rubbish we'd been buying. Virtually cut out bread around the same time (I used it to have a least 3 slices a day) and the weight just fell off me.

Went to Italy on holiday in September, ate very very well but still no bread and didn't put on any weight. :j Must have been all that walking and the huge amounts of fresh fruit, veg and fish I was eating!

Since returning from holiday it's been very stressful and both at home and work and turned to food for comfort ...

Life not so stressful now but I need to break the bad habits I've got myself back into. Don't have a very sweet tooth but I adore savoury things like cheese and crisps. I don't want to lose a lot of weight, only around a stone to get my BMI back below 25, and have been inspired but the comments on this thread. Thanks everyone!
Weighed myself on Sunday morning (that was a shock! ) so this is my first week. Walking more, upped my fruit and veg intake, everything's getting weighed and written down. If I can't find a calorie value for something then it doesn't get eaten. I hate following diets and I don't believe in denying myself anything because then I just get obsessive about it and instead of eating one biscuit I'll eat several! Next weigh in is Sunday morning ...
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Hi guys, Just thought I would drop in and let you know that I joined weightwatchers tonight (or should I say rejoined). I quite like the idea of the no count, similar to SW, so will give it a whirl and keep you posted.
    £2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far
