My right leg looks AWFUL it is black from bruising and I have ten cuts down my calf (is this too much information?) But I am the proud owner of a beautiful white surgical stocking which is exremely tight. I have to wear it for ten days and nights . I am losing weight sweating trying to get the darn thing back on !!! I am going back to slimming world on Wednesday but I am not getting weighed as my leg is still swollen and believe me I need all the help I can get to lose any weight. Catch you all soon and thanks again

Well to Ally and Linda I say "Get well soon", and concentrate on that rather than trying to lose weight. Having said that, if you can't be as active as usual, it's crucial not to eat too much, and of course what most of us do is overcompensate and comfort eat because we've less activity to take our mind off food!

I've been having a very mixed week: too many long car journeys and buffet meals, not enough walking and portion control. And you know what I've noticed? The key thing is the walking, not what I eat. If I can't keep moving, the weight comes back on even if I try really hard not to pig myself. If I keep moving, I can almost stop worrying about what I eat.

Some tips for buffet meals: picked up the hard way :(

    1. If possible, avoid helping to put the food out. Less temptation to nibble the sausage rolls which fall off the plate and onto the table ...
    2. Don't start piling your plate up the minute you get near the table. Eye everything up and decide what you really really like the look of. Take that, in moderation, and leave the boring stuff behind.
    3. When you've loaded your plate, move away from the food table, preferably where you can't see it.
    4. When you've finished your plate, lose it. Less temptation to go back for seconds.
    5. Once you've lost your food plate, don't hover near the food table.
    6. Try to avoid helping clear the food away. Washing up's better for weight loss, as long as you've got a good plate and bowl scraper intervening so you're not tempted to finish off the last 6 sausage rolls or lick all the serving spoons still loaded with dessert ...
    7. Try to find someone interesting to talk to, preferably someone to whom you don't want to give the impression that you are a chocoholic, obssessed by pudding, or an expert on sausage rolls. This would, of course, be entirely misleading, wouldn't it?
    8. Don't bore everyone stupid by talking about nothing but your diet or calorie intake. Tell them about the MSE website instead!

  • thought I'd delurk and say hello :D

I've lost nearly 5 stones over 2 years, not awfully quickly but steadily and no major regains. I am still overweight with BMI of 31.4, and working towards mini goal 30 BMI. Not finding it easy, but am determined.

Although still overweight, have improved cholesterol and blood pressure.

I have limited mobility it's been through diet alone, and the diet is - healthy eating.

1st I excluded wheat as had positive test for classical allergy, and lost 1/2 stone very quickly wihtout making any other changes.

then started made more GI aware choices about food such as eating porridge - and lost another 2 stones.

I plateaued and joined WW for while which got me going again, but gave it up as hated constant measuring and felt the concept of eating all your points regardless and avoiding healthy foods such as oily fish because it's very high points is daft.

I'm working on cutting out 90% of sugar, keeping blood sugar levels stable with frequent meals/planned snacks to hopefully reduce snack-attacks.

Like Sue's idea about watching portion size, if it's on the plate it's hard to leave.

I suggest you join Slimming World if you hate weighing and measuring. There are LOTS of "free" foods, the only things I weigh/measure are breakfast cereal and milk, meat on a green day and potatoes on an original day. I lose a pound or two a week. The group is very supportive, and I like the web site too. Going to the weekly class and staying to the meeting is a great help to me. I have had a bad relationship with food for 40 years, its a hard habit to break.

....... And you know what I've noticed? The key thing is the walking, not what I eat.

Funny you should say that, as I'm not what I would call a really active person... but when I have a week off and end up with my bum virtually rooted to the computer chair all week I don't lose any weight. When I'm back at work and walking around the different offices & nipping up and down the stairs for toilet, staffroom etc I do lose weight better.

So I think it is any activity which helps :) I always thought you had to jiggle in the gym to others amusement & your embarrassment, whilst getting horribly sweaty that was the only thing that would help, but I am glad to say now that I reckon standing, walking around - anything other than just planting your bum on a seat is all a benefit and helps to encourage those pounds and inches to slowly creep away.

Sue, I love your buffet tips! If I am at a function and have a buffet I always find it really hard to stick to the healthy stuff & always feel quite hard done by that I have to skip the 'good' (fattening) stuff. I'll give your tips a try next time I get the chance :) Thanks for sharing!

  • hello everyone, i would love to lose some weight through this group with all your tips. my story is i weigh 15st 4lb and am 5' 7". have hovered around the 12.5-13 st for couple of years. have gained the rest in the last year. i slipped a disc a year ago and was so bad have been off work since and at home most of the time. i have very restricted mobility and when i go out it is in a wheelchair. my disc has now completely collapsed and am awaiting a date for surgery. am surgery would go alot better if i shifted a bit of weight and gp agrees with me. she blames comfort eating for the extra weight and i hate to say i agree with her.
did atkins year ago lost stone for wedding but regained it on honeymoon, dont want to go there again so any help gratefully received :-[
