...but how do you know how many calories you use up in a day ???

you dont unless you go for extensive testing

but there are lots of sites on the net that will give you a good average of what you would need at your weight and height before gaining weight

as for counting the calories lots of sites and books about that as well

I'm slimming with the help of slimming world. I've lost 16lbs in 5 weeks and I'm very proud of myself. What is helping me is the vast range of "free foods". Although it might not be frugal to spend 35 quid every 10 weeks to get weighed its working for me!

    slimming world is great

I lost loads on that diet very similar to atkins isnt it

but a bit more flexible you can have bread and cereal (sure thing to get me eating though)

don't know if any you watched Fat Nation on BBC1 on Thursday, 8 pm - I listened more than watched, but have been to the website:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/bigchallenge/

Not sure I'd exactly recommend it - I mean, who wants to be told they're an obese :( apple :( (pears are better!)? And if anyone starts jogging up and down while watching the tv in this house they are evicted from the lounge pronto, because it's jolly distracting! Buttock clenching is, however, acceptable.

Despite that there is some quite useful info there, including instant calculations of your BMI (Body Mass Indicator) and another cheap pedometer! £3.99, and you also get
    • a tape measure (so you have no excuse for not knowing if you're an apple or a pear)
    • a fridge magnet "to remind you of the right daily balance of food for your plate" and
    • a "waist-reducing card game - to be played with your family and friends" ???
http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/beyond/bigchallenge.shtml to order if you can't see the link on the main page ...

The most useful thing I found was that the BMI calculator enabled me to work out how much weight I really needed to lose. Hm. Can't imagine myself 3 stone lighter, so my first goal is to get myself back to "overweight" by Christmas AND STAY THERE!!!

I have just thought of another excellent reason to go for a brisk walk. I have just returned, glowing slightly, and will now retire to watch TV with my son. Hopefully he will allow me to put an arm round his shoulder (this one likes cuddles), and he will benefit from the fullness of this glow.

And thus I will be revenged on him for a quite deliberate fart released as he left the lounge when I sent him to bed the other night! ;D ;D ;D

Started with Weightwatchers (again!!) 11 weeks ago and was fatboy at 14st 1lb.
Couldn't get in to my suit.
Weighed this week and now down to 12st 1lb.......................a loss of 18lbs.
Can now wear my slimboy trousers again, but still another few pound to go. Achieved by changing diet, swimming and worst of all cutting back on the booze which is the hardest part!!!!!!!!!!1
Good luck to all trying to looooooooooooooooose weight.

    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have just seen the DEFINITIVE reason why no self-respecting MSE - or, indeed, sensible person - would go on the Atkins Diet. Unless they loathe chocolate, in which case they're beyond all help.

In Tesco, by the till, a 60g bar of special Atkins chocolate for ... wait for it ... £1.27. :o

    That's nearly £30 per Kg. :o:o

    That's outrageous! :o:o:o

Who would buy this stuff? It probably doesn't even taste very nice!

No, if you can't live without chocolate choose a diet where you can eat it, in moderation of course!

It was a sure thing that everyone would jump on the low carb band wagon eventually as there are so many people on the diet. It makes it lucrative for places to cater for the low carb diet. Can't believe the cost of the chocolate but then again if you are desperate and you think it won't harm the diet then you'd pay it without even thinking and just hope it tasted as nice as Cadbury's ;D

I weighed yesterday and lost another pound :) So I'm on my way to the next half stone mini-target, only another 6 pounds for that next milestone on my marathon trip down the scales!

Wow Furniture Man & Pablo_Money, nice going!!
Linda12 - sorry to hear about the problems you have at the moment and I hope all goes well with the vein op.

Nice new thread we have here again - thanks Sheel! Can't believe we are up to 4 now!
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out
