  • Hi Home Alone,

it's nice to hear from someone else with back and mobility problems. It's hard not to comfort eat when you're stuck indoors and in pain. However when I was laid up with disc problems I gained weight even though I was eating so little I had to be put on those protein shakes. My GP said that if you are very immobile you will gain weight even if you don;t overeat. He also said that anti-inflammatory drugs interfere with the metabolism. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

I was laid up again for six months last year and given exercises I could do lying down by the physios. The purpose of the exercises was to strengthen my back but I found that doing them helped keep the weight down as well. Two for the price of one!

Let me know how the surgery goes.

As I'm unable to do any kind of vigorous exercise routine for medical reasons, I find Slimmers World a good diet plan to follow as you lose weight easily (provided you don't eat too much ::)) whether or not you exercise.  I also love the fact you can eat carbs on it, which are great "fillers".

In the last 3 weeks (working on 10 "syns" a day), I've lost 7lbs ... just another 20lbs or so to go!

I'm not attending classes, but doing this on my own (I've borrowed the books from a friend).  My question is ... does anyone out there know if you're allowed 10 "syns" a day regardless of your size, or does it vary?

    Thanks for any advice.

I have been attending Slimming World for 12 weeks today and I am very pleased with my weight loss. Jacqui (class leader) says to have between 5 and 15 syns per day.

I have made two very important purchases, a very nice frying pan and a can of fry light. My daily bread allowance is 2 slices from a small brown loaf, which I save for lunch time, so I have fried bacon, egg, mushrooms and tomatoes for my breakfast (or vice versa).

The £3.95 a week class fee is an investment in my health. I admire those who can slim without the support of a class, I imagine I will still be attending (for free) when I am at my target weight!

    Thanks Lynne. :)

It's so good to see 7lbs. disappear quickly that it's given me a good incentive to carry on. I too rely heavily on Frylite. I allow myself 2 pieces of toast in the morning and 2 Weetabix, followed by a huge salad with cottage cheese and coleslaw, ham/olives at lunch and something like a Quorn chilli and rice or chicken curry on shredded leaks for tea. The great thing is you need never go hungry and you don't feel guilty eating carbs.

I hope to lose another 7lbs at least by Christmas, so it won't feel like the end of the world when I put a few pounds back on. ::)

Good luck, you're doing really well.

Have been stalking this thread for some time now and am finding it invaluable. My problem is that after 3 months with Weightwatchers, I was just 2lb from my target weight 3 weeks ago. Sounds great I know but I got so close and then yo-yo-ed up again. Due to get weighed again tomorrow and just know I have put weight on again this week (snacking like a mad thing today). What's happening to me - had 3 months of steady weight loss and now this?

First I think I'd check my current weight and waist measurement against something like the BBC Fat Nation BMI and apple/pear calculator, and decide whether that WW target is really what you want to aim for or whether you could call it quits now.

    BMI

    Apple or Pear

If you decide to keep going, there are two things you might bear in mind. One is that the more you lose, the harder it is to lose, because your body adjusts to your calorie intake etc. So you get close, but then get discouraged, bored, think what's the point etc etc etc. Apparently what you have to do to keep losing is increase your activity: you can't do it by just reducing what you eat. Never reached that stage myself!

But I heard somewhere, and I expect it was on Radio 4, about a woman who saw a life coach or someone like that because she was having terrible problems losing weight. And it came out that she thought she'd have to be a different person if she was thinner - new style of dressing, new personality etc. And she was actually quite happy as she was, thank you very much. So she was internally resisting what she was externally trying to do.

So at the risk of spouting a load of psycho babble: could there be something in you that either actively doesn't want to hit your target weight, or is scared of what will happen when you do? Maybe it's the dishy HappyMaleChick at your WW class that you haven't yet plucked up courage to talk to, maybe it's a lack of other social life, maybe it's the terrifying thought of replacing all your clothes with ones which fit the new you on a tight budget and having to trail round the shops with three screaming toddlers! I don't know.

Hope some of that helps or gives you some ideas.

    All the best!

Please don't despair ... I've done the same myself in the past. When you get that near to your goal, it's all too easy to relax a bit too much (celebrating prematurely ???).

It's not a disaster at all and you'll probably find there's little damage done and nothing that can't be rectified in a couple of weeks. Just try to make a really determined effort and get back on the diet ... you can do it. :).

    Good luck.

Thanks to you both (and Sue, how did you know about the happymalechick and my 3 screaming toddlers!). Think Mimi has hit the nail on the head tho' about celebrating too soon as I have been doing this very thing lately. I know hitting the WW target is not that important in itself but it does mean that I get to attend meetings free of charge to get weighed. This single thing has been the key to my weight loss. I struggled for the last two years to lose a stone and tried so many different plans. Going to WW to be weighed and knowing that someone else was tracking my weight has really worked for me and I would be keen to maintain this habit long after I reach my goal. Will just have to have a last push over the next few weeks. Thanks again and good luck to everyone else here :)

    Lucky guess! ;)

I'm very excited: falling flat on my face so it hurt to eat for almost a week resulted in me hitting X stones 0 lbs on my scales!!! Usually I get on again to see if I can get it down a bit further but I didn't dare in case it went up! ;D

Now this means I am only 7 lbs off my Christmas target - to be overweight not obese! Which as I am doing this very gradually, just walking more and eating less, nothing OTT, is not an amazing goal but still looks do-able.

Falling over also put me off the idea of botoxing my lips, thus saving money. ;D Not that I'd ever thought of botox before but I did get that pouty look. Shame it was marred by the scars! Even so, I think what I'm saving on not having permanently pouty lips can go into the New Trousers Fund!
