Nice looking bike to be fair, but in all likelihood you will only own it for a season before you are champing at the bit to take your test and move up to a nice 250cc.

Might as well have bought something less flashy and used the extra money on some gear.

And no matter how much safety gear you buy, certain impacts will result in injury/death anyway. No helmet will protect you from a wall at 30mph, for example.

Nor are they designed to protect from a head on impact - they are designed to protect you from the impact of your head falling through the air and making side-on contact with the ground before bouncing a few times and scraping along the road until it comes to a rest.

Absolutely disagree. If it were my son, I would want him to have the very best protection ... and besides, you can never overstate the benefits of safety gear.

Safety gear is important, but so is knowing when you're trying to get blood out of a stone.

The difference between wearing jeans and wearing motorcycle leather trousers is huge and I would definitely recommend wearing leathers or equivalent gear whenever possible.

The difference between wearing motorcycle leather trousers with 'brand A' on them, and 'brand B' on them, is extremely marginal. Check the stitching, make sure it's real leather.

Most serious injuries are caused by collision with solid objects, not by simply falling off, and gear can't do a huge amount to help if the speed differential is high (helmets do the best job, but are still only good for slow impacts).

To elaborate on my earlier point - sitting in a car, you are already fairly well protected. Yet, if we run with the 'you can never overstate the benefits of safety gear' line, you'd wear a helmet in the car.
Some of the posters on here clearly know what they are talking about

    Indeed.

The point I am trying to make is that it is nonsense to believe that you can just buy the 'best' gear and not worry any more.

Leathers will protect you from sliding across the tarmac. Basically any set specifically designed for motorcycle use will do that. None of them will do any good if your leg gets caught between your bike and a car.

I have reached that stage in life where I am the older person who simply tuts and shakes his head.

I'm sure that when I was 17 my generation weren't as stupid!

I think we were just as stupid - we just didn't have so much money to be stupid with.

Remember if you have not got it on sorn,
It is now a legal offense to not have insurance and they are very quick off the mark with it..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Mara is right. If you think safety gear isn't important, try discussing that with a Police Officer who's had to go to knock on a door and tell a woman that her son has been killed in a road accident.

    Quite right.

I would appreciate if you read my posts in their entirety, rather than simply replying to headlines.

Well, I did read your posts in entirety - and I do agree with what you say. But I apologise if I have offended you. I meant not to disregard your opinion but, mostly, to draw a comparison between, say, an old sub-standard helmet picked up for £10 off eBay and an up-to-date helmet purchased at whatever price they go for.
