Im not a biker myslef but I know people who are plus there are people on the forums who are bikers and I bet they wouldnt pay £80 for a helmet.

    Depends really.

I've seen some pretty good offers when a dealer is trying to get rid of some stock that's now end of line (I think my current Caberg was around £85), but otherwise you are right - you get what you pay for.

After all, it's only your brain you are protecting - nothing serious.

Surely if a helmet has the relevant BS (or whatever helmets have) it should be OK.

That's like saying that if a loan company is authorised and regulated by the FSA then they should be ok.

Like I said, it's only your brain.

You get what you pay for.

    hi GUYS

I'm a 17 year old male i just bought a 125cc motorcycle with the money i have saved up from work (£2300) it was pretty much a last ditched overpriced bid on ebay, which left me with £0.

    You spend £2300 on a 125cc?

What make and model and was it brand new?

Most folk only hold onto 125s for a season or two and even then, a basic one for getting the feel of the roads should only set you back £500.

This means i can not start up my insurance and buy my helmet, gloves, boots etc.
So I'm wondering is there some way i can borrow around £630, this month and pay it back within the next 2 months.

At your age you cannot enter into a legally binding credit agreement, sorry.
I seriously need to find an organization/company who would be willing to do this for me. As i basically have a theft magnet in the car park next to a council estate with no insurance covering me for theft/damages.

Sell it, buy a MUCH cheaper 125cc and then use the balance to cover the insurance, tax and protection.

Out of interest, since you already said you need £120 to pay for your CBT how did you get it home?

Insurance deposit: £150 (with £180, 8 monthly payments.)

    Not sure I follow you.

They want a deposit of £150 a month followed by 8 monthly payments of £180, or a further payment of £180 split over ten months?

You have to insure it even if not in use. If you apply for a sorn you can't use the bike for 12 months.

My first proper full face helmet cost me over £100....in 1987. Certainly saved my bonce when a silly begger pulled out on me.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Some of the posters here are overstating the benefits of safety gear a little I think.

After a point with helmets you're paying for comfort and noise protection over protection. Check the SHARP web site for relative ratings of helmets.

Armour can be picked up on eBay or Gumtree, as long as you buy thick leather (preferably a reputable brand) you'll be okay.

I spent less than £60 on a jacket and trousers that would have cost £300+ in stores. The lining is a little bit rough, the protective aspect (leather) is in mint condition.

Boots and gloves can be done for around £100, perhaps £150 if you want something decent.

Gloves are by far more important - with a boot, you're basically paying for ankle support as there is virtually no way the boot itself will fail. Often people use army surplus boots. Paying more gives you more convenience (zips, waterproofing, etc), and perhaps a shiny brand name.

There is no reason to assume that more expensive = better.

And no matter how much safety gear you buy, certain impacts will result in injury/death anyway. No helmet will protect you from a wall at 30mph, for example.

Absolutely disagree. If it were my son, I would want him to have the very best protection. Some of the posters on here clearly know what they are talking about - and besides, you can never overstate the benefits of safety gear.

Nope. If you SORN a vehicle you can cancel it whenever you like, merely by purchasing a fresh tax disc.

I got my kit from bike show ed of days, motorcycle city closing down sale and generally looking out for end of season savvy buys.

Hence I have Dainese clothing that set me back £120 all in
    Boots were Alpinestars for £75
Helmet was caberg at £75, full face but with the flip up option and gloves were branded at £50, cannot remember as it's been 2 years since I regularly rode

Anyhoo, no point scaring the lad about prices when he cannot insure it or owt yet
Nor will he unless he gets a guarantor as to get it over terms is a credit agreement, at 17 generally a no-no unfortunately.

OP, stay safe, take it easy and dont be in a rush to hit a ton, it'll come soon enough and you will always remember the day, for now concern yourself more with slow control and keeping it off it's side ;)

When did you ever see a 125cc scooter rider wearing armour. You are lucky if you even see one in anything more than shirtsleeves. Usually they don't even wear gloves or boots.
I agree entirely with andy.m. My motorcycle gear did not cost anything like some of the prices being quoted on here. I bought it from classic bike shows or special offers from local dealers. I remember that I got a superb pair of leather trousers from a local dealer that only cost £100, when I packed up motor cycling a couple of years ago I sold them for about £75.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
