£2300 for the bike plus approx. another £700 in protective gear?
Wouldn't you be better off with a car now you're 17?
Comes complete with a built in steel cage that'll provide more protection than a bit of cow skin ever will.0 -

I live in streatham in south london, my best quote for a car was £6ooo compared to £1500 for a motorcycle.0 -

Hiya Hamilton - well done on saving up for your bike; that's quite an achievement. I'm sorry if you think that we are having a go at you - we aren't, most of the posters genuinely do have your best interests at heart. Whatever you get; make sure that a decent-quality helmet is at the top of your list. A year or so ago a chap on a motorbike was killed literally outside my friend's front door - he took a corner too fast and went under the wheels of a range-rover. It wasn't pretty.
You do seem like a sensible guy (despite meeting up with someone you met off eBay with £2300 cash in your pocket, but no-one's perfect and that isn't the issue here) - please do look after yourself, and enjoy your bike with the decent safety gear (maybe you could ask for contributions towards the gear and insurance as birthday/Christmas presents?).
I know what it's like though - I had to save up for my car and my driving lessons and all necessary stuff myself. I was about 23 by the time I could afford it!0 -
A bicycle would have been sensible, doing stuff like this at 17 is a bit of a cliche
I'd store it in my bedroom, desperate measures. What model is it0 -

What a happy couple... is that what they mean when they call a girl "the town bike"...?0 -
I was only on a 50cc, but I still had gloves, boots and a proper jacket, as well as my helmet. My gloves saved my hands in the winter!* Jan NSD *

I do think a lot on here are scaremongeing about the helmet. Even you say dont skimp and then go on to give an example where the wearing of a helmet was irrelevant
to the OP find someome secure to lock it up until you have the cash or sell it0 -

An Oyster card will set you back about £1200 a year. I live in Streatham, commute to central London evry day and have no problems at all not owning a car or a bike. Maybe that's why I'm not looking to borrow money I will have no way of paying back :rotfl:
BTW, don't you have to be 18 to use eBay?0 -

Oops; I apologise. I should have said that the unfortunate rider in question was NOT adequately protected. Sorry about that.0 -
Surely if a helmet has the relevant BS (or whatever helmets have) it should be OK.0
