Now is the Dixons Tax Free in Heathrow likely to have the 60gb version, and does the tax-free mean it eliminates the VAT resulting in a reduction from the standard £309 to £255?
This would save a lot of potential hassle and panic returning through Heathrow Customs!
Yes, it would definitely be a much better idea to buy it from Dixons tax free (and you won't have to worry about customs because you'll have bought it from within the UK). Probably best to phone them up in advance, though (to make sure they have stock). It should be ~£263.Metallifux wrote:I was in New York at the beginning of March. I wasn't looking for an Ipod but a Digital Camera. Tax free Dixons at Heathrow were trying to sell the Fuji S5500 for £246 when it is £249.99 in the regular store which certainly doesn't equate to tax free in my book. I ended up getting the S5100 (US version) with a 512MB card, a case and a 5 year international warranty for £240. Rip off Britain go figure. In the shops at JFK they had been selling ipods even cheaper than the stores in New York, but of course were sold out.
Ordinarily I would agree with you but Apple products are globally price fixed so before tax, they should retail for pretty much the same amount regardless of which country you're in or which shop you buy it from.0 -

Thank you for your help.I'm trying to understand what the site is telling me.0 -
Tried to get the iriver H10 5GB from unbeatable.co.uk for £99.97. It was quite obvious they had made a mistake on their website so they emailed me to say it was a special order and they are now out of stock. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Although I personally feel if etailers get their prices wrong it' their tough luck and they should honour them.0 -
Hi,
This is my first post, and I hope it is of use to some of you!
It seems that no one has mentioned the Rio Carbon in this thread which is a quite a capable and nicely-designed MP3 player.
I got mine at Dixons in October, the only high street retailer that stocked them at the time, taking advantage of the Dixons Tax Free in the airport to save the VAT (and this saving is also applicable to any extended warranty you may purchase).
Prices have been falling, and the cheapest in the UK seems to be Amazon at £129.99 (free Super Saver delivery)
However you can undercut this slightly:
Dixons current price is £149.99
Buy it Dixons tax free in the airport for £127.65
And if you have shares in BAA you have a £5 off voucher for any purchase over £100 so you'd presumably get it for £122.65 :rotfl:

You can get a top notch mp3 for below £200 and avoid itunes, i bought a Creative Zen 60gb (ie 15,000 tracks) mp3 from pixmania.com, very easy to use, good sound quality and ok battery.
Admittedly the display did stopped working after a few months but Creatives customer service has been great and have replaced the broken one under warrently without any fuss.
As for itunes, do not use them. The music you download from them is on mp4 and this is not compatable with normal mp3's and will not play on them, plus its over priced.
You can get a "top notch" mp3 player for less that #200 - but are the readers of this board really aware of the features that an iPod offers cf. lesser machines?
Nevermind the scope and choice of the iTMS (iTunes Music Store) presented in a format which combines both high quality and small size; stays within the law, allows customers to listen to the music downloaded for all time, and pays applicable taxes, royalties and copyright levies on your behalf?
Or would an iPod also be a good choice as it can be used as a Hard Drive (both MAC and PC), Dictaphone, HiFi, Photo Album, Dictionary, Language Assistant, Torch, Laser Pointer, Address Book, Calendar, Reference Tool, Boom Box, Mirror, Compatibility with Podcasting Software, Presentation tool, Mixing Box, and MP3 player?
I rest my Case - off to read the news headlines I downloaded onto my iPod overnight with the software Pod2Go (not availble for any other MP3 player).
Or perhaps I could have bought something without the integrated software to organise my msuic and rename my tracks.
I gould be off to listen to "anthedy_003.mp3". Or something.

I need some teckie help here. Please.
I have an Apple ibook, and want an large MP3 player with FM radio. But I don't want a ipod. Yes I know I can get a clunky addon for about £45 but that really prices it out of the market.
Looking in Dixons at their ever price plumeting Windows based MP3 players, I can see no evidence any of them are Mac compatable. I have tried to have a sensible converasation about this in dixons but.......
So if any of you know which MP3 players have developed Mac compatable software, please tell. It will be cheaper than buying a new ibook, I've got 15gbs and growing of music and it will be safer than balancing my i-book on the mantlepiece to plug it into my mini hi-fi.
If any of you know how an airport express actually works, that may be worth knowing as well.
I've used advice from this site before and ordered a dvdrecorder. However the company are a bit naughty, have taken my money nearly a month ago and it is still 'on order'. Rats.
Thanks (in advance) Chillout5892

I know this is off the point but yes I want a mp3 player but the cost of downloading songs albums seems expensive to me.0

Expensive compared to what ? A CD ?
1 - You get to choose the 'good' songs to buy off an album, and don't have to pay for the crap ones
2 - You can dowlodad them in an instant
3 - CDWOW may be cheaper, if so, you're right.0 -
Not sure if this has already been covered but there is a site that offers free ipod minis - small catch you have to sign up to a couple of offers and get a few friends of people to sign up too. I've signed up to the offers but haven't yet managed to get my friends to do it. Try the site and if you're lucky keep me posted.
