Great Ipod/ Ipod-ish Hunt

  • Ebuyer sell a pretty good MP3 player for £24 incuding delivery. Its called a "Pocki", has 128Mb of memory which stores about 60 songs. It can play MP3, WMA and WAV files

It has an expansion slot so you can add more memory (SD memory) to it; SD is very cheap, you can get 256mb for around £15 so its easy to expand.

The Pocki is rougly equivalent to a Ipod Shuffle but it has an LCD display which shows the filename of the MP3 being played (NOTE: This is not the same as the track name / ID3 tag, but if you name your files sensibly it is very useful).

It is also a FM radio, can be used to record voice memos, can be used as a USB card reader / pen drive...

It comes with a necklace so can be worn around the neck, and is styled to look like a Nokia phone, although it is smaller than my Nokia 8310 mobile phone...

I bought one for my mum who uses it every day on the commute to London.

One hint if you get one of these "SOLID STATE" mp3 players: Battery life. The lower the bit-rate the MP3 is recorded at, the longer the battery life of your MP3 player. I use a fairly low but "variable" bit rate setting and get about 15hrs out of my Rio Cali Mp3 player. Plus you will be able to store more MP3s on the player as a lower bit-rate = smaller file size.

The pocki is on ebuyer at http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6459898511&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=55679

If that link does not work, go to http://www.ebuyer.co.uk and search for "pocki".

If you like your ID3 tags then try the Rio Cali, it has either 128Mb or 256 Mb of memory and can be expanded using SD cards. You can get these for about £50, it has an FM radio, and it has a 5 line display so shows the track name, artist, album etc.
  • On Saturday I was in my local argos and they had their Mini Ipods on sale for £109. Not sure if it was a one off or what but they where stacked behind the collection counter.
Also, my Dad was in London the other day and said that the Apple shop had them for £100. Again may have been a special offer but both are worth looking out at that price.
I personally like the Micro Zen, anyone got any good prices for that model?

I think that the Creative Zen Touch (20GB) is a bargain compared with the Ipod 20GB. You should be able to find it for about £160, for example here:

OK it's styling is a bit of an Ipod rip-off, and it's a bit thicker. But the battery life is great at around 24 hours. There are also some reports that the central scroll bar is a little over sensitive - but I'd be surprised if they can't fix this with a firmware update.

Please help re the i pod debate, my daughter wants an i pod (nothing else) and listens to Harry Potter all the time what size pod will I need to take all the books plus spare for music, anyone any idea? Thanks. I also been on Apple site and they start at £130 free engraving, all colours. Some of the stores are selling cheaper but the battery life is not 18 hours...false economy? :p
  • For an iPod-like device I would recommend the iRiver H120, a 20GB hard disk MP£ player. Compared to Apple's ubiquitous machine it has better battery life, a built-in radio, it supports more file formats, it has a great remote control and you can record directly onto it from your hi-fi if you wish. Oh, and it's cheaper!

    Cheapest I've found is £174 (+ about £4 P&P) from https://www.7dayshop.com - http://!!!!!!.com/5gx2w.
  • Richer sounds do some good bargains on all sorts of electrical goods including Creative Zen Micro for £149.95. Here's a link for their MP3/Portable player page: http://ws4.richersounds.com/productlist.php?cda=productlist&sgroup=PORTABLEMP3

Last night I ordered 2 20gb ipods via a Morgan Stanley Mastercard offer. They had to be ordered separately to get them at the offer price and on a Morgan Stanley Mastercard but the price includes free engraving and free shipping. The link from Morgan Stanley takes you to the official Apple UK web-site and the final price paid was £184.32. I have already had confirmation that they should arrive on Tuesday.
  • not sure if this is useful but as IPODS curently have a shelf life of less than 8 weeks (due to Apple grabbing our cash with new models) the discontiinued models are available at excellent prices, best I've found is John Lewis (never Knowingly undersold) I bought a 40 photo last week for £239.

The catch - well they are shop returned, but in my case this meant that the box hadn't even been opened as the original purchaser had taken it home only to discover didn't have firewire. Friend also bought similar had box checked by staff, all complete. Clever teenage recipient noticed lead was misssing, good old John Lewis apologised and immediately supplied misssing item.

Do ask if it is the 'best' price, also if not on display ask if any customer returns, carry the whole range including latest models although the discount on these isn't as great. Mini's for less than £100, which I think beats anything else out there. Good luck hope it helps (also do this deal on all there electrical stock) still holds guarantee and also their reputation/customer service.
  • what you see else where is exactly what apple have, so battery life is the same. Best bet if you know little about it is to try somewhere that they will take the time to explain all the functions to you, a 20 will more than cover what you require.
  • You can get a free mini ipod if you know any supply teachers (teachers who work through agencies rather than in permanent jobs).

There's a major teacher shortage in the UK so agencies will often reward you for referring teachers to them. The best offer I know of is a free mini ipod for every teacher you refer to Teacheractive (https://www.teacheractive.com).

They're only West Midlands based though so not much use for those in other parts of the country, but if you do know teachers in that neck of the woods, it's the cheapest ipod you're going to find!
