I used to rent a garage and use it for bootsale stuff, then I took photos of the stuff and sat at home and worked out the cost - would have had to be goldplated stuff to be worthwhile!

Well I am the proud owner of an awesome doggy-gate (ok, I retrieved one section of bed frame and its brilliant!) I did a deal with the guys and they took some other carp I hadn't paid to have removed, instead, fence panels that they aren't supposed to take :)
But the gate has already made life easier as clumsy-dog can no longer wade through things I am trying to sort out or need to be tied up when I open the other gate near the road

Present news: I have found a bottle of booze that doesn't even have a bottle, it's a refill pouch! How good is that!

I found some packaging at the back of a cupboard, with a 2009 delivery date on it! Now at the post office wrapped around a parcel

Thanks for the suggestions for the naughty bag, I think I will use it in the loft like a giant santa sack tied at the neck, for several things - I can't go up there but can get a friend to and if its transparent they'll be able to find things quickly
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

That Storage thing is basically the bog standard Antique programme. It claimed one person made thousands, the majority of it being not from paying storage fees anymore, only to mention the storage hadn't been cancelled. Everybody had posh antiques (does anybody pay ten thousand pounds for a table, then get bored and stick it in an aluminium shed?) and there wasn't a single half bed frame, ripped double quilt bag, chipped mug or mould infested set of nylon cardigans.

It just feeds the notion that everything is worth something. But if you have stuff worth over a thousand pounds, you tend to know about it already, rather than having a vague notion that something, somewhere over there, has to be worth a bit if you get around to finding somebody who thinks the same. But until then, it's best to keep it with the newspapers and plastic shopping bags.

Don't get sucked into the fantasy.

ETA: Blossom, it's a piece of plastic. One that will probably go crispy and split with stuff in it. It's not 'naughty' really, is it? It doesn't have feelings. There is no emotion to it, it really doesn't care if you clutter up your loft with it or send it to be recycled and reduce the amount of oil used for plastics manufacture. And you aren't being naughty, either. Even if your shock recently has brought back lots of stuff about your mum and you being a girl, honey.

Are you actually being reasonable in keeping it, or is it displacement from being faced with the consequences of passing that coat on?

Finally gave into my dislike of using the tumble dryer in a last ditch attempt to catch up with the laundry! Think I done 4 Washington today and I still have an over spilling laundry basket!!! It was taking over the landing and the bathroom previously. I done a stack of ironing but am of course still nowhere close to done

As I was concentrating on laundry for most of the day I got no dishes done (from yesterday and this morning) so now they have built up!

Is there ever going to be a day when the general housework is under control enough to actually properly tackle the 'Richard?'

It's beginning to seem like sorting the kitchen alone is going to take from now until Xmas to sort and I'm really not that bad on a 'Richard' scale! Tomorrow shall consist of much, much more ironing, hopefully by then it will actually LOOK like I've done something!

    I have days like that.

How long do the washes on your machine last? Enough to do the washing up I would hope?

Then, next wash done, have a cuppa, strictly to a fifteen minute schedule break and.......hit the Richard.

Personally, if you have a Richard mountain or challenge, I would be prepared to drop normal routines (outside of washing up or laundary) but forget hoovering or dusting etc, and make SPACE.

Space makes it easier to keep up with the regular housework.

SJ, I find the housework takes a back seat, so it's very much a Catch22 situation for me. I also find I cannot relax or just sit without fretting about the things that need doing, and because of the mess, lots need doing. I'm hoping there comes a day when I can sit and read a book and not feel guilty all the time...or just not do something one day and feel ok about it.

I don't Hoover or dust, lol! I was ironing and folding (undies, socks) during the washings. (Washingtons. Lol, silly I pad)

My ironing mountain is Richard, it takes over my kitchen......and I need the kitchen clear for Xmas dinner!

Pfft. I love to iron, but seriously....pants and socks? Is it for children? How old are they, can they fold their own (unironed) pants and socks. And while their things out from the ironing pile and put them away.

In my household....(no kids, corporate husband who is a big kid at the weekend)...shirts need ironing, smart casual trousers get a hanger to dry on and 19/20 they don't. T shirts NEVER get ironed, nor jeans or pants or socks. Id I had school skirts and trousers I would be hanging too.

So shirts, smart clothes, non jersey items, sheets etc do. Sometimes tea towel do, but not while tackling Richard.

(could this be an example of the common richarders fault of staving for perfectionism holding you back? )

Oh I meant I was folding the undies etc and not ironing them, lol!

The kids are 5,6 and 7 and its best to do anything necessary in the house during school time as when they are back its mainly a fight to get 3 lots of homework done, dinner sorted etc. (although today I ironed through the homework time, lol!)

I have a 'perfectionism' complex which means that I REALLY cannot bring myself to put away clothes unironed (although I will happily chuck most things on straight out the pile)

I need to streamline the kitchen anyway, too much clutter in there, even if it is mainly food! I'm beginning to realise that actually having a huge stock of things is a complete waste a lot of the time. Stuff ends up going in the bin, months out of date! Especially as I'm not great at planning meals or checking what I have stocked up!

  • I am mighty relieved sjpr to find you were not ironing socks and undies!

Today, I discovered something very useful with my email account. You probably all know this:o, but if you select 'from' it reorganisings all your emails in order of who they are from not when received.
I found this had the same effect as removing clutter from a shelf and putting it all on the sofa to sort: out of context it was much easier to get rid of many of them.
    I've whittled down from 320 to 195:D.

All 3 freecycled items now collected :j.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I wish I had had the guts/knowledge to have posted my 'before' pics I took of my ironing pile, kitchen bunker and the mess that is my bedroom (the kids rooms are a mess too but that's kind of their fault and not mine lol). I have tidied up everything down my side of the bed, I've cleared one kitchen bunker and I've cleared on top of the fridge....these areas have stayed clear since I tackled them so I'm making a little headway. I'm just anxious with Christmas coming, even though I know I will just end up chucking half the contents of the kitchen into my bedroom temporarily over Christmas

I also have got rid of a lot of toys and think my walk in cupboard is still tidy (the Christmas tree is in front of it now).

And when I am sorting through laundry now I chuck anything straight away, ie : too-small-socks, stained school shirts.......I'd normally keep EVERYTHING around for 2nd-handing to someone at the school, cs or the 'rubbish' stuff for cash for clothes.....I realise I'm not being very OS and recycling fabric now, but its what I need to do at the mo!

I think I am scared I'm going to be back to square 1 come Boxing Day, however I think I may actually just chuck half the toys up the loft and bring a few out each month.
