GQ:
I can only really comment on my great aunt's habits as my parents were fairly efficient at getting rid of things. My great aunt (b.1896) and great uncle would buy certain new items - household, clothing - on a yearly basis whether they needed them or not. Where it got interesting was that they didn't really need to buy these items due to a really ferocious make do and mend philosophy. Sheets side to middle then made into home made pot holders with spare bits of blanket; that sort of thing.
So, when she passed on, there were new sets of sheets and pillowcases, both flannelette and cotton as well as a load of other textiles. It wasn't exactly hoarding but careful husbanding of resources.‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ David Lynch.

HIya
Oh yes I am a total emotional shopper and am fully aware of that lol! Luckily my emotional shopping tends to be in Primark and Asda, not Prada and Armani!! My aforementioned blazer is being worn to work this evening and it was only £7 but I do love it so am going to wear it and not leave it hanging in the wardrobe because I feel guilty
I am feeling a lot better about being in my house in the daytime now it is so much more sorted. I actually invited a school mum around for coffee this morning AND gave her a grand tour of all 3 floors *faints*. It helps that Ive been to her house loads and didnt feel huge pressure to "keep up" as she has undone washing up and piles of washing tooI only apologised for my bedroom (state) and the fact that I have a rat in a cage in the kitchen which some people really object to! However it was a massive breakthrough just to say "hey pop in for a coffee" I am very chuffed.
I have been very organised and am going to start my ebay this afternoon before work that I am also very organised for!Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

Cat is back home slowly recovering.
I am not happy, the oven isn't working, I can't get spares (it's the thermostat switch) for this model, even the manufacturer can't get spares. The glass lid for the wok has been smashed. It's already dark. And it's raining again.
Bleh.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Jo-Jo, glad cat is back, did I miss something? I didn't know she was going away?
Sorry about your oven, such a shame you can't get spares.
Idris, my emotional shopping is for bargains and CS, never had Prada or Armani, but I know it still mounts up even so, and I wish I could stop.0 -
Hi all
Not much removal of carp going on but I am able to keep things clean and clear.
My dad came last weekend to 'mist' the walls in my lounge that were plastered in Oct so I had to remove everything bar the furniture. Which means I'm going to be very harsh with what comes back into the lounge when it is finally decorated (hopefully before xmas). Then I will be able to sort my room of despair.
I realise that most of my problem is keeping stuff that I don't know what to do with - it's not suitable for cs, can't be recycled but would be wasteful if thrown into landfill, so I keep hold of it until I can make a decision (normally I just end up getting fed up and throw it away, but it can take months to get to that point ) *sigh*
I have a mountain of paper work to shred at the weekend.
Keep going all, this thread has been so inspiring and I feel freer for being able to get rid of 'things' that were holding me back. I'm nowhere need a clutter free home but I'm getting there and I'm determined to have a carp free home x0 -
That was an interesting question GreyQueen. It led me to think about my friends and whether we are hoarding more than we used to. I think that mainly, however, people have more money so therefore able to have more things, and that people have less time so do less 'housekeeping' and clearing things out.
I think. But out of six of us, three have hoarding tendencies, including myself. Birds of a feather?0 -

She got really ill from liver disease over the weekend and spent Monday, Tuesday and most of Wednesday in the vet's on a drip.
I've just had a full volume, yelling at the top of my voice row with the Fella, which is completely unheard of. He was completely out of order with some things he had said and done, coupled with some generally stupid things plus his deliberately ignoring some extremely serious health issues, and after the week I've had, I just ripped right into him.
I just don't do that. Ever.
Anyhow, he's stormed out, I threw his stuff out after him and that seems like it's that.
Ah well.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Sorry about the row with your fella.
Things are said in the heat of the moment, maybe in a while he will be back?0 -

Probably.
But I meant everything, including the bit where I [STRIKE]said[/STRIKE] shouted 'If you don't do what the doctor said, you are going to DIE'. He apparently doesn't give a ****. So I told him he could go forth as I have no intention of watching it happen. So he did.
Whether he meant it or not, well, it doesn't matter. I did.
I hate everybody now. Even the boy cat got told off for picking on skinny old girl cat.
Bah. Humbug.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I'm having a carp night too, but hugs Jo-Jo, maybe things will look better in the morning. It's very hard watching someone not take responsibility for their own health yet knowing the outcome if they don't, but I suspect it's also his camouflage for feelings of being scared.0
