Every weekend, I seem to spend so long cleaning up that there's no time for anything else :-( I know what Flylady would say about that too... But I've managed to vacuum & dust the sitting room & gather all the paper together into the laundry basket so I can sort a bit at a time.
I've bags of stuff to get rid of in the hallway, 2 more bags for CS, the bag of clothes for my nephew that DS2 has grown out of or has too many of, a bag to go to work, the textiles recycling bag is getting more in it. Having got 5 pairs of school trousers for DS2 from the car boot sale, I got rid of the 3 pairs he had last year that needed mending. The 2 pairs of shorts from Mr A need the seams re-stitching, I'll not get school trousers from there again as I've had the same problem too many times.
Storage issues - we've not had much storage furniture in this house. Errant husband didn't like my sideboard that I had stuff in - sewing box, birthday cards for people, stamps, etc, & did like CD racks & DVD
shelves for all his CDs, videos &DVDs. So 2 house moves ago, we'd lost the sideboard.
So my sewing box, knitting bag etc haven't had anywhere really apart from stuffed in the wardrobe, which then means I put off using them, so the mending pile mounts up, & I have to buy more school trousers so the boys have some to wear...
I bought 1kea shelving - 1 for the tv & media stuff, & 1 for other stuff. Its got 25 cubbies in it, so my sewing stuff has a home in the sitting room & I can grab it & do a quick mend. I'm bringing all the puzzles & games down to put on 1 of the units, so we can work out what we want to keep & what can go.
It is more storage but its bringing stuff where we need it, can see it & if it gets too much of something, I'll have to deal with it as I can't hide it away.0 -
GQ I think I need to send my eldest dd to you. She loves ALL living things (well sometimes not people)
She loves picking up creepy crawlies. Snails, slugs, spiders. Etc. don't know where she gets it from at all!
She even cried coz OH showed my other two what happens when you salt a Slug as it was 'cruel'Awww, that's sweet. I wouldn't touch a slug on a bet; I cut them in half with a spade or a knife.
I have searched for the pat yourself on the back smiley but it was unaccountably missing. However, I feel that I have crossed a Rubicon in my personal journey.
I saw a whole pile of really good stuff inc brand new in packets, outside a house with a Free - help yourself sign...........and I looked and carried on walking!
:j Go, me! Couldn't stop myself looking but managed to leave it all for someone who would need and use it. :j
I have also finished a bottle of shampoo in a lovely strong bottle which I would have normally wanted to keep in reserve for ? and have rinsed it and put it for the recycling.
It's strange and unnatural and I'm loving it.Have also decluttered a pick'n'mix grotbag of gastropods who made the mistake of getting in my way whilst I was gardening...........
The books tell me that slugs can live 4-5 years. In theory.....mwah ha ha!
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ, :T:T:beer:
I took my trolley thing to the tip, and guess what, there was another trolley of similar era but with 3 shelves and I thought...mmmhhhh... BUT, I walked away...phew. :rotfl:0 -
Howdie folks,
WHITEWING.........hope you are feeling better.
BYATT.......do you have any jelly left ?:D
GQ........heavens , still loving talking about slicing up slugs...........I'm guessing they don't live fot 4 years when near you
, I'm more of a salt chick , let them dry out then get rid.
SKIPSMUM.........how hilarious.......you are de-cluttering a hoarding thread :rotfl: :rotfl: ........made me laugh anyhow.
Right....well I have in fact achieved quite a bit ! Thank ggod I have started now for next week with how long it has taken. I have de-richarded the bathroom shelves and thrown loads of stuff out that was redundant and I had been keeping it because I liked 'looking' at the bottle. Bathroom looks so much better......and bigger !
I have attacked the dresser in kitchen and thrown out loads of old spice/herbs/oils/vinegar/seeds/....the list goes on...that wwere no longer of use or empty or out of date or never been used in 3 years etc........dresser still looks 'busy' , but it is all now usable and usefull....and does look much neater. Went into 'container' cupboard  holy moly....I have millions of plastic boxes....threw 3 out......but had bought another 3 yesterday.......really cool ones that have a dip section, meat /cheese section....and a knife and fork in the lid !!........fantastic stuff ! . Great for work...but not sure when I would need 3 of them.........along with the other probable 40 in cupboard. Will attack this again when family been and gone as it is a bit stupid having them all.
All in all....a productive day.
Oh and I cat-flapped 1 herman , will cat-flap another on monday, and may make the other into a kind of soda bread.
I made the Herman.......spent a so**ing fortune on organic apricots, macadamia nuts, waalnuts, dates etc.....actually left it in oven a bit too long..............anyhow I don't LIKE cake.........so why did I even bother ?!?!.........a combination I think of 'can't pass the opportunity up' syndrome.........and I haven't made one before so wanted to do it and change the recipe a bit. Anyhow , total waste of time , will make the bread and if I don't like that will ditch the starter or I will be perpetually doing this purely to give to other people.
I was thinking the other day about getting a shed.....but think this would be a mistake as don't garden so it is only another storage place.
Good luck all
Onwards and outwards !!:)Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
Calicocat, my parents downsized from their 5 bedroom house to move into a 3 bedroom bungalow. 5 years later & the loft is full, both sheds are full, the summer house is full, the garage is so full DS1'S motorbike can't go in there, the spare bedroom is full & has to be emptied out for grandchildren to sleep in it. & the rest of the house looks full too.
Don't get a shed! (unless needed for lawn mower, etc)0 -
I've found the comments on my uni stuff all very useful. I don't actually know if I have my dissertation still. I got a first for the dissertation!
There would be value in storing on a memory stick in terms of the huge amount of space it would free up. And I have a fairly decent scanner, so even if it took me some time, it could still be worth it.

Whitewing - I can comment on your post with a degree (haha) of authority because I have just de-cluttered my Uni work.
If you got a first then your Uni should keep a copy of your work in their library I think. Don't ever get rid of certificates or your transcript as copies of these are often needed for internship/job applications. And they are nice to frame and put on your office wall:p.
However, what I did was - keep my Dis, Major Project & Placement report as hard copies, plus a report which I thought was well written and 2 essays with frankly amazing marks from a tutor who never gave easy marks.
Everything else was binned after checking I had a copy on my computer. I found any feedback sheets and annotated the final essays as well with the marks and comments or scanned in a bits. Even cleared some of the many drafts I had on my computer, but kept a lot of bibliographys, just in case I ever need to go back to the source.
Data storage (like external hard drives) are cheap , we have loads fo music etc and I back up my computer every couple of weeks and so all this stuff is not even taking up space on my laptop really.

hi. i am an Acadenic in a university and the only things we keep indefinofely are dissertations that achieve over 70%. All assignments must be kept for one academic year and exam papers for 5.
Notes will go out of date. how about keeping copies of all module documents / specifications so you know the subjects covered? then you can easily look up any up to date info when you need it. Most assignments should be submitted as word processed ao you may still have those and then just keep any feedback sheets.
just a thought. and i am a total hypocrite as i still have all my masters stuffI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Onwards and outwards !!:)I never thought of it like that! So funny.
Re sheds............dangerous territory. Like heroin, sheds are easy to get into and hard to quit. It starts small, in a DIY Barn, you loiter in the gardening section and they have a modest little 6 x 8 on special. They suck you in, and you fall for it. But a 6 x 8 is never enough, is it? You want, you need more. Because you're worth it. You get another 6 x 8. Or you start getting into heavy usage with the 8 x 10s, the workshops. Only neither you nor the OH are working in there, are you? It's more storage.
Don't think we, your fellow hoarders, don't know what's going on in there. Stuff expands to fill the space available - plus 50%.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
