shopping trolley dented hire car

Hi folks,

When loading my car with shopping today, the trolley drifted slowly and I never noticed as I was loading stuff into the back of my car and it bumped a car what looked very lightly, but when I moved it there was a very minor thin little dent in the back drivers side wheel arch about an inch long and thin and one slightly higher like a pin dent if that makes sense.

I'm not even sure if it was my trolley that did them. I waited on the owner of the car coming back and pointed it out to him and he said he is pretty sure they were not there when he picked up the car (hire car due back next week with a £600 excess).

I did have a witness who confirmed my trolley did bump the car lightly and the witness gave his details to the driver.

Can anyone tell me what happens next ? I'm worried they (the hire company) try and bill me the £600 excess for what will cost less than £100 to repair if they do repair it at all.

(It's been a bad week only getting worse by the looks of things).

Oh and I stupidly never took down the registration of the car or took a picture of the dents or even took the name of the hire company.

I'd be grateful if anyone could let me know what may or may not happen next.

Thanks in advance.

You will be paying £600 + the Hirers Deposit.

Seriously? Bliddy hell, even though there is no way it would cost that much to repair?

Surely they are not allowed to profiteer out of this?

I'd be cheaper meeting the guy (should have taken his number now) to a local repairer and paying for another hire car for the day to get his repaired.

Oh boy ................. should've stayed in bed.

They can try, but they have to prove they have incurred a loss, However it's going to be a three way claim, so I don't know how this'll go.

Is it wrong to hope when they do a walk round inspection to hope they miss it?

Or hope the guy drives through a very muddy puddle and this covers the dents (yes they are that minor)?

Or should I just nip over to the loans board now?

Argh................... (sniff sniff, feeling sorry for myself and the poor guy as I really don't want him to be slapped with an excess of that amount or rather any at all.)

On the plus side, at least I waited on him unlike many others and gave my details.

I was the one with the shopping trolley who bumped the hire car, the hire car was another persons i.e. 3rd party.

I was loading shopping into my own car when it drifted bumping the other persons (hire) car. My own car did not touch the hire car only the shopping trolley.

    Hope that makes sense.

I've got dings / dents in my current and previous cars from Supermarket car parts (most probably kids opening car doors onto mine) and no notes have been left.

I am eternally grateful to the person who left their details as a witness to someone who caused £800+ worth of damage to my previous car in a Supermarket car park and this plays on my mind.

I'd hate to have thought this poor guy would end up with £600+ bill just because I'd walked away although I can see why folks can. Even the witness I think wondered why I was waiting and it's not something you would do a walk round inspection for every time you parked your car in a Supermarket car park or even every time you park your car "just incase someone has pranged it".

How do you know how much it'll cost to repair? I think you might find after the dent has been prepped, filled, and the whole panel resprayed and blended you could well be looking at £500+.

Also, don't forget you're potentially liable, not only for the damage but any reasonable out of pocket expenses of the 3rd party, ie, his excess.
