Unlike teething gels, powders or pain relief syrups and products, the traditional beaded amber necklaces imported from the Baltic region are a non-invasive and side-effect free remedy for the pain and complications of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds.

Amber is a natural analgesic - it can help with teething, restlessness, anxiety, stress, aches and pains as well as eczema and other skin conditions.

Babies do NOT chew on the amber - it works by warming against the skin and releasing minute amounts of soothing oils which is absorbed into the bloodstream.
A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs.
Amber is a resin, not a stone. It is therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.
Scientific investigation into the therapeutic effects of amber is ongoing.
Currently, there are two different theories that attempt to explain how wearing amber on the skin can have a soothing and calming effect on teething babies and toddlers.
One theory suggests that when amber is worn on the skin, the skin’s warmth releases minuscule amounts of healing oils from the amber which are then absorbed via the skin into the bloodstream.
Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognized by allopathic medicine. In Austria, Switzerland and Germany, you will find amber teething necklaces sold in local pharmacies. Pharmacists and doctors have long known about the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, antispasmodic, expectorant, and febrifuge (anti-fever) functions.
A second theory is based on scientific findings which have shown that amber is electromagnetically alive and therefore charged with a significant amount of organic energy. Its special attribute is the fact that it is electronegative. Wearing amber produces negative ionisation on the skin’s surface. This, in turn, has a positive influence on the human body. The negative ions assist in the in the prevention of illness. These health-promoting effects apply to babies, children and adults alike.
It is possible that the soothing and calming effect of amber teething necklaces, which has been empirically observed, is based on a combination of the factors listed above.
Wearing Baltic Amber – The highest content of succinic acid is found in the amber cortex – the external layer of the stone. It has long been believed that by wearing raw or polished natural Baltic amber against the skin, a “homeopathic dose” of succinic acid is absorbed into the body, enough to exert its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immune enhancing and vitality boosting influence.
Due to their natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, Baltic amber beads have long been valued as teething necklaces. Worn by babies and small children for countless centuries throughout Europe, the amber beads seem to ease babies teething discomforts and are believed to help calm a fussy baby. The beads are simply worn around the neck and not chewed.

Have a read of the thread I linked to on the first page. The claims for how they are supposed to work are pretty easily debunked.

You may as well rub a cucumber on the baby's ears, or sing Black Sabbath songs to them at twenty past each hour.

At least those things wouldn't be potentially dangerous either. ;)

The explanation is belief. There is no empirical evidence, so it's pure belief. People believe all sorts of strange things and the vast majority of them are sincere. It still doesn't make any of it true but that's rarely the point. And there's little point in disagreeing with them about it either.

Half of my family are from the Baltic as well and the beneficial affects of wearing amber is unheard of there as I've asked some of them. They thought I was crackers for asking. You would have thought that a society who have harvested amber for thousands of years (maybe tens of thousands, it was treasured by the ancient Greeks and other civilisations) would be familiar with the folklore, but no.

Surely the cucumber could break, fall into the cot beside the baby and they could choke on it.

    ;)

Yup. The hubby is still chuckling over this. Keeps muttering "one born every minute but if it makes them happy..."
