Can you buy amber necklaces for teething in shops?

I know there are sceptics who say they're useless, etc, but son and daughter in law are at the point of being willing to try anything, so nothing ventured nothing gained.

I can only see them for sale online, and they really would like to get one asap, and not have to wait for postage.

Does anyone know of anywhere (Milton Keynes, Bedford, Luton area preferably - but will travel!) that sells them in store please.

I believe from reading far too many baby-forums that lots of places have been pre-emptively recalling them as they're being looked at for safety concerns and they're becoming a bit arkward to find at the moment. I have no opinions either way on them - I just remember reading lots of forum threads on it about a month ago.

I've never heard of giving teething babies precious amber to bite down on. Can someone please explain the thinking behind these and why other things might not be equally suitable, and why amber might be controversial? I would have thought that anything cold and hard would be equally effective. I wonder what my mother gave us? It's too late to ask now.....

Amber necklaces can break, and the pieces then present a choking hazard.

Babies don't bite on them, they wear them as a normal necklace or even round ankles. The amber has healing powers when its warmed by the skin.
My daughter is 3 1/2 and still wears hers now as its sooo pretty. she had it from around 4 months old and I honestly never knew when she was teething. previous to that she was in a lot of pain. I would say they are one of the best things I have ever bought.
Can't see why genuine amber necklaces would be recalled as each bead is seperately knotted so if it does break then its safe - indeed my daughter broke her first one aged about 2 1/2 and only one bead fell off which which was found instantly.
I don't know if you can buy them on the high street but mine came next day delivery although I am sorry I can't remember the website.

Some people think it has magical powers, the arguments on both sides were covered well in this thread:

From posting on another thread plenty of reasons why Amber necklaces individually knotted have been subject of recalls in EU and elsewhere

Just so people are informed, I notice that websites are being recommended that sell amber necklaces that are 29 to 33cm long. I also notice that websites selling Lithuanian amber necklaces are being recommended. You may be interested that the EU have banned some amber necklaces and UK trading standards have asked for voluntary withdrawal of these products due to safety concerns http://www.amberpumpkin.com/amber-teething-necklace-recall.html
and a warning from Australia http://www.productsafety.gov.au/cont.../itemId/989380
