Ok, so it is from the Daily Mail, so YMMV, but still worth a read before you give one of these to your child:

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Some people think it has magical powers, the arguments on both sides were covered well in this thread:

In which case some people are plain nuts or to be kind, just sadly deluded.

Thanks for the link Person_One: I'll have read of that now.

If I believed in it, I'd get the baby nice big chunks that were too big to be a choking hazard. But I suppose that they market the smaller chunks as they're much cheaper.

Here's a thought: amber is fossilised pine-resin so why don't parents just give their teething darlings a good swig of Retsina and be done with it? Much cheaper than good Baltic amber necklaces.

I've heard that teething problems in babies are unknown in Greece....

Uk trading standards have asked retailers to stop sales of Amber necklaces following testing of various necklaces which proved hazardous. Check your local trading standards site eg http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/extra/news-item.cfm/newsid/874

Rospa also called for a ban on them due to danger of choking and strangulation.

No reputable seller should be selling them now and many are offering refunds on those already sold.
  • Oh my God. Is this what new mums think about these days? How about your pinky? Or the edge of the coffee table? Or a gel teething ring? Or Anbesol? None of these did my babes any harm! My MIL had an ancient teak-effect coffee table circa 1970 and everyone of her lads and all her grandchildren used the edges to teeth on!

Amber necklaces. FGS! I've heard it all now......

So the answer is "no", then :D

Thank you. I am aware of all the arguments as to whether or not they work.

Even if it is all placebo to the parents, they wanted to try one - "just to see". As it will be worn around the ankle, underneath socks and inside a babygro, I don't think the choking hazard is as bad as if it was worn around the neck or not inside clothing.

    We'll see. :)

No, you don't understand: amber has special healing powers when its warmed by the skin.

I have some magic beans and some healing crystals here if anyone's interested.

I have several amber necklaces here, received as presents as common-or-garden jewellery. Does this mean I could make some money out of them now that they aren't available for sale any longer? Oh goody
