My broadband usage - cannot believe it!

As a result of this thread I've been doing a bit of digging around at the girlfriends.
She is with Virgin Media for TV etc. and is on their lowest 10GB internet package.
I suspect she is fairly typical of the average 10GB package user. She uses email and IM to contact friends and family, does some on-line shopping and browsing.
At the moment VM don't provide usage data but it seems thay are looking at doing so in the future.
I had a look at her router yesterday, she has one of the newish superhubs, and the data is there in a resetable counter. Working out her usage as best as I can it seems like she is close to her 10GB limit.
I know her habits and she's not watching video other than an occasional YouTube funny that people email her about.
I've reset the counter and will have a look in a month and see but it certainly looks like data usage is up around the 10GB mark and her usage is what I would call very light. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
My latest update (I know that this may seen boring to some, but I think it is important).
These figures are all since disabling wireless on the router/hub, and are the morning figures from "MyBT"
Saturday 9/6 - 5.66 GB
Sunday 10/6 - 5.87 GB
Monday 11/6 - 5.97 GB
I am still in excess of my average for the month, but judging by the last couple of days figures, may keep it below 10GB
My advice now to others, would be to disable the wireless connection if it is not essential.
Are you sure you don't have a virus or malware issue? With that kind of usage you could be operating a mail relay for some botnet! One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I agree it's a ridiculously large figure my mother has a 5gb monthly limit on her P.O BB service and she's never gone over the limit yet and I even manage to watch iPlayer programmes when I'm visiting.0

In addition, as the average Internet connection speed increases, website builders see the opportunity to put more and higher quality content into their sites: this also increases your data throughout, despite you only visiting the same site as before.
Indeed - If web devs still used the rules established when we all had really crappy, 28 & 56k modems on lines shared with the phone ~ where you only used gifs or optimised jpegs, you always used low-res thumbnail images linking to hi-res versions if it was a photo or say a complex image, you tended to avoid hotlinking to graphics that would regularly change, to allow the browser's cache to be used to it's full ~ ..it would really help in this regard.
Would probably negate the need for mobile-versions of sites too, unless you really wanted to do something radical with the mobile layout.0 -
On another thread I had horrendous broadband usage and it was traced to visiting Grandson's computer still uploading to torrents as Utorrent wasn't uninstalled and was set to start on startup.
