BBC iplayer for example uploaded as it downloaded (dunno if this is still the case however) so in theory could be sending data out all the time for others to download from (Peer to Peer). If Iplayer doesn't do that any more,...

iPlayer doesn't do peer-to-peer any more.

Does your son play a lot on the Xbox, as online gaming will ramp up a lot of usage on any console & if you're also on the standalone computer, well his may put you close to the 10Gb per month.

Just a quick note BB usage monitors won't advise on an streaming through a online gaming session via Xbox,Ps3,Wii, etc etc.

Just downloaded that. Can it tell me how much my son's xbox live is using?
No, Networx can only display what is being used on your PC. Really the router is the place where stats about downloads and uploads should be held, but I don't know of a router that does a decent job on that...

    Hi there,
How much of your contract is left to run? We had exactly the same problem with BT as did many of my friends. I waited til my 18 month contract was up and then phoned and explained the problems I'd been having and said because of that I didn't wish to renew my contract and could they please cancel it. They offered me a discount but I didn't think it was good enough so I held out as i explained that every month I had been shelling out extra and really wasn't happy as no-one had been able to explain why i had been going over so much. In the end they upgraded my package to unlimited for less than what i had been paying for 10MB.
They won't upgrade the contract at a discount unless your contract is up. Hope you get it sorted. I know how frustrating it is!

I had this with BT shortly after we switched (we were with Sky before that)

Managed to upgrade to unlimited for a cheaper price within a month, and had the £140 charge removed (I work in Media, so use a fair bit of internet)

Ask nicely, and you may get.

What's the price difference between BT's 10Gb package and their unlimited one?

    Can you afford the extra?

If so, upgrade yourself. After a couple of months, you won't pay any attention to your usage....

Cheers for all the replies. We have only been with BT for 6 months, so we are tied into their contract. I am not a particularly stupid person, but BT is certainly working out a lot more expensive than I originally thought. I will upgrade to the unlimited, but the whole point of me switching, was being assured by one of BT's sales people that 10GB would be more than enough.
We have a complete package with them at the moment - one line, broadband 10GB, free anytime national calls, and the cost is coming out at around £45 per month for that, which includes calls abroad using 0870 codes.

Just had a look at the BT broadband usage monitor, and we somehow used .8GB yesterday, despite not uploading anything or more importantly downloading - no streaming, no youtube - we were out for much of the day, and I used the PC in the morning for around an hour, and at night for about the same, just catching up on news, coming on here and a couple of other forums.
So in one day nearly a gigabyte used for doing nothing, when my monthly average has been 7GB so far?

What you described for 1 day should be no more than 0.1GB. Somebody's already said it - turn your router off for 1 day to check the BT monitor is working. If that's ok, something (or somebody) else is using your connection.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.
